Currently looking for work as a freelance proofreader and copyeditor. I have extensive experience as a writing tutor & peer reviewer & can apply my skills to proofreading nonfiction & academic writing as well as fiction. If you or someone you know needs a proofreader for their work, feel free to DM.

I like my job. Except when I have to proof a document that desperately needs a heavy edit but I’ve only been hired to proof it. This shouldn’t go out into the world in this state but there’s not much I can do except flag it with the publisher

Feel more like an end-of-days high street preacher every day. Giving up clean water for tech that’s ruining our minds and the planet! Isn’t that a mad thing to do?? Doesn’t anyone think that’s a bad idea?? www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

honestly have noticed Ecosia getting better and better, and suggest using it as your search engine over google

I've started a Substack where I interview neurodivergent authors about their writing, reading & advice to aspiring writers! It was a pleasure this week to speak to @rachelcdailey.bsky.social about her work, tips and books she loves neurodivergentnotesonwriting.substack.com/p/i-wanted-t... #BookSky

Currently reading this. Perks of working in an architecture bookshop. And it’s very good so far

So I now live a street away from where Robert Louis Stevenson grew up and this is very exciting for various versions of little me. Little me who loved books. Little me who loved pirates. Little me who wanted to be a writer. Little me whose fav poem was by RLS

I honestly believe our most powerful position in a toxic time that feeds on cynicism, apathy,& despair is to genuinely care and act for a better world. Cynicism is our enemy. We should check it, incl. on the left. It’s not intellectually superior. It’s the virus they’re trying to infect us with. NO

There is no need to spend your life fighting gravity - as in, trying to keep from aging. Aging is victory. Learn to cook something cheap that feeds a crowd, and share it. Treat yourself like someone you love, and treat other people the same way.

Radical publishing notion, right here: if your publishers are making a living from publishing and selling your books, then you, the author, should be making a living from writing them.

Sleepy

Always be a little kinder than is necessary

February is #ReadIndies month - read books from small independent publishers. So… here’s a few to follow: @renardpress.bsky.social @ofmooseandmen.bsky.social @galleybeggars.bsky.social @ortacpress.bsky.social @charcopress.com @northodoxpress.bsky.social @fitzcarraldoeds.bsky.social

Officially moved from Glasgow to Edinburgh today. I don’t remember it being this surreal last time I moved cities

Great to see momentum continuing to grow for introducing the #NaturalHistory GCSE - it just needs green light from government! A brilliant way to help restore nature, improve young people’s physical & mental health & fill the green skills gap.

I have broken the syntax that was in the poems and from which you were probably hoping for polish Forgive me they were discourteous so sweet and so unprofessional

Yes #BookSky #BeckyChambers

First they came for the immigrants, and I spoke out, because I’ve read the damn poem before and I know how it ends.

Hey while megaretailers profiting one of the richest men in world are out here doing this shit www.advocate.com/news/amazon-... maybe it's a fun time to switch to @librofm.bsky.social for audiobooks. Select the indie bookstore you'd like to support, listen away. Comp prices to aforementioned jerks

I know books are cheaper and hand delivered to your door step if you order on Amazon. I know. I understand times are rough and things are expensive. I just ask you please consider once in a while to go to a local bookstore. Or visit a library. They'll even order books for you. Please I beg of you.

If true, what Labour front bench is doing is unforgivable. The #CANBill is essential & has backing of huge number of experts, scientists, unions & enjoys cross-party support. If backbench Labour MPs ever consider rebelling against leadership on anything, let it be this - a liveable future for all 👇

There is a map of any power cuts in Scotland here (none in Edinburgh yet...) powertrack.ssen.co.uk/powertrack#Q...

For all my #BookSky friends that are trying to move away from the Bezos infrastructure, just a reminder that Goodreads is owned by him through Nash Holdings. Clicks are currency friends @thestorygraph.com is a Black Woman founded company www.womenwhocode.com/blog/world-b...

You’re a threat to society and the moral fabric of western civilisation so hold your chin up high and act like it

A good post-therapy afternoon involves a sunny walk to a garden, a wee loch and then a pub. Reading A Flat Place by @noreenmasud.bsky.social which I was telling my therapist all about earlier. Trying to treat this limbo week before I move as a little holiday and fill it with nice (but cheap) things

Delighted to say that my first interview on my new substack interviewing neurodivergent writers is with none other than @lucyrosecreates.bsky.social - Lucy's thoughts are generous and illuminating both us a writer and publishing professional tinyurl.com/3rrm6hw2

we are the adaptation no oppressor can imagine … we are building our stamina we dream of the real world we carry god, and see god, in each of our faces your holiness is not too heavy, not for me adriennemareebrown.net/2025/01/20/i...

Ok #booksky, let’s talk. 👎🏼Goodreads, owned by Amazon, fuels its monopoly on books. 👍🏼StoryGraph, a Black woman-owned platform, offers an ethical, ad-free alternative with mood-based recommendations, user control over data, and a focus on inclusivity. Support diversity over corporate power!

Happy #Caturday

Sometimes, having editor-brain is a curse when you’re just trying to read for fun.

I wish we could cultivate a culture where people get excited about and share the new skills they've learned more than the new stuff they've bought.

thats ok im already fluent in anxiety

You don't know what any of your favorite authors are like in real life unless you live with them. Read what you enjoy, avoid authors who have earned your personal disdain if you wish, but please do not make lists of "the good ones." You do not know.

This is perhaps a bit like trying to uninvent the bloody crossbow, but if you're concerned by the government's march towards ceding all our creative endeavours to the maw of training generative AI, have a look at this and write to your MP. www.creativerightsinai.co.uk?fbclid=IwY2x...

I've started a Substack to celebrate neurodivergent writers' work, and to interview them about their craft and writing advice. I'm so excited about the interviews I've got lined up (incl. two hugely anticipated 2025 debut writers!) and would love it if you could share! tinyurl.com/32zwezsc

It's disappointing that people are doing this, especially when such a huge part of this story is that Gaiman's abuse was largely facilitated by being constantly positioned by the media & wider institutional structures of fandom as one of the Good Ones.
