SCIENCE : Des chercheurs reproduisent le comportement des suricates en diffusant le bruit de talons hauts entre les bureaux

Welcome to the public domain, LAUGHING BOY (1929) by Oliver La Farge, a story of love, identity, & cultural tension, awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1930. 🖋️📖🏆 ➡️ https://blog.archive.org/2025/01/01/welcome-to-the-public-domain-in-2025 #InternetArchive #PublicDomain #PublicDomainDay

So. It has officially happened. I have been officially let go from my position at CDC. I wasn’t a probationary employee. I had stellar performance reviews every year. I’ll be ok. But please understand that many worked HARD to get into these positions and were doing great public health work.

Programming languages: "We are just a way to operate computers in a way that makes sense to humans." Programming languages [takes a big joint hit]: "What if there were 5 kinds of nothingness?"

It is simply not enough for universities to say, “Our grants & research offices are looking into how research will be affected by the latest directive.” University leaders must actively and very publicly make the case for the kind of work many of us do. The silence on this front is deafening.

Any thoughts ? youtu.be/ChS0eT683bA 🧪🎓

OMFG wait for the "meanwhile at night" bit at the end

More from inside NIH: Per a source with knowledge, for all internal research (of which there is like $10 billion worth or so), ALL purchasing shut down as of yesterday. That means gloves, reagents, anything involved with lab work, which means a lot of that work will stop.

If you’ve been directly impacted by a pause or cancellation of an NIH study session, we @forbes.com would like to talk to you

A friendly reminder. You don't get to dictate how someone lives their life. Just because you live your life differently and have different beliefs, does not mean you can barge into someone else's space and rudely explain how they're "wrong". Especially when what they're doing has zero affect on you.

Menacé par l'érosion du trait de côté et par la dune, le beau #phare de la Coubre, qui fêtera ses 120 ans en octobre 2025, sera bientôt démoli. Et il ne sera pas remplacé... 😞 1/6 ⤵️⤵️⤵️

Depression and anxiety in children and young people are often overlooked or misunderstood. If you're a parent, caregiver or teacher, it's important to recognize the signs and know what to look for.

After further interrogations and suggestions (thank you for the thoughts everyone!)… In the spirit of the Turing Test, I propose the Cripslock Test: No system can be called AGI if that system cannot reliably determine whether or not it is spewing absolute bullshit. (Named for Sacharissa Cripslock)

audiobooks, being able to watch game playthrus, knitting machines, crochet rings. these are all wonderful and amazing things that make such fun hobbies accessible. they do not make someone not a fan or doing something lesser. this is accessibility. reassess yourself.

hot take: long git commit messages are bad, if it's relevant info it should go in code comments or docs

"Given the exodus of the academic community from X to Bluesky, we would advocate that publishers and database managers incorporate direct-share links to Bluesky, and so assist the academic community in its shift to a platform more suited to scientific discussion." www.nature.com/articles/d41...

I’m still looking to interview folks about their motivations for joining Bluesky as part of my PhD research! If you’re interested in how we can work together to make social media a fairer place & you have a free 60 mins, then I would love to chat with you! Pls DM or 📧 - [email protected]
