I'm suddenly glad I spent 3 days 4 months ago transferring all the Kindle purchases I cared about to a Calibre server. And I've already been using the Kobo bookstore for years as a primary, since they partnered with local bookstores for sales.

“The walkout was organized in part by an eighth-grade student who is not yet 14 years old, she and her mother said in a joint phone interview…The student said that she and other students decided to act after seeing how Trump’s executive orders would target diversity events.” Tiny badasses

Since JD Vance just converted to Catholicism 5 minutes ago, he might not know this: the Pope authoring a letter where he goes out of his way to correct you, specifically, is considered "bad" in the Catholic tradition

They cannot possibly... oh who am I kidding, of fucking course they're this stupid

JIT Is Killing Us All

Mind-boggling wreckage. Among the lifesaving programs now disrupted by Elon’s attack on @USAID: phase 1 trials for a possible HIV vaccine.

Sometimes you just have to say “fuck you” with a flourish

Based on this list, it's more or less impossible to do ANY research. Want a control group? Good luck defining it! Want to talk about basic data sampling? lolnope My ENGINEERING THESIS ON 3D MODELING would have gotten flagged by this nonsense. And THAT was straight-up the shit they'd want

I feel like I'm going to need to write that thread/essay on "why the quest for 'efficiency' is a race to destruction : or someone needs to take the Toyota Method away from VCs until they're old enough to play with it"

Basically, even if the thing really needs to be replaced, you shouldn't get rid of it if it's load-bearing unless you have the replacement right there. Especially if the load is critical to vulnerable systems. And people.

NEW: WIRED has identified six young men—all apparently between the ages of 19 and 24, according to public databases, their online presences, and other records—who have little to no government experience and are now playing critical roles in Musk’s DOGE project. By @telliotter.bsky.social

Musk's cronies tried to to gain access to classified USAID data. USAID Director of Security John Voorhees security said no. The Musk people threatened to call in the US Marshals and take the data at gunpoint. They still said no. edition.cnn.com/2025/02/02/p...

Oh cool, another data point to add to my "JIT is not a silver bullet and the economists/financial class have been absolute morons about it" list

You know, I when I was reading through the Shadowrun lore, I got to the point where the Native American Nations got a lot of their land back. And then kicked settlers out. "Is this an overreaction? Surely some could stay..." Oh. No. No, it was not an overreaction. What the everloving fuck is this

brb, contacting my MA congress-humans...

You know, I'm old enough to remember when plugging an possibly-unsecured computer into the federal network & using it even as an email server was apparently a major scandal & Republicans lost their minds over it. Apparently, they said it made someone unfit to have access to those kinds of systems?

The Woody Guthrie Center restocked.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this kind of screams "ripping a giant hole in the national security apparatus" that I would assume would have certain people incredibly concerned.

This is a really good essay about authoritarian corruption. "Laws are real, but they’re real like the Velveteen Rabbit is real."

I don't understand why all these mediocre, white guys are so against DEI hiring. How else did they get their jobs, if it's not based on race, as it clearly wasn't because of any sort of merit or skill on their part?

I didn't think it could get worse than that stupid VR thing but congrats, CNN, u did it

only appropriate political response here is to demand the white house explain how its actions aren’t responsible www.huffpost.com/entry/trump-...

Being able to still find joy and sharing good fun when people are trying their hardest to make you despair is also necessary and good. We need joy as much as anger. We need to laugh too.
