Also-- I totally missed that in your original post you brought up the revenue issue! D'oh!

And given the current regime, anything that lets the gov't further regulate speech we've accepted for decades is something I'm gonna question (slippery slope and all.)

To be clear, I probably would've been against opening up the gates to advertising drugs, and, for that matter lawyers when we did. But now, given the internet of it all, and the fact that these ads are the backbones of certain genres of TV (like news and much of daytime? Not so sure.

I was too glib there. Both are commercial speech, which is why there can be limits at all. It's more a matter of what we decide to regulate. Tobacco is bad and harmful, even in moderation. Pharma products can and are abused but they also do a lot of good-- so we opted to allow them to be marketed

(That said, many of these drugs are legit miracles and lifesavers, which is why RFK is so dangerous: using legit anger over big pharma to deny science)

To me the ads are a symptom of the bigger disease, namely the unchecked and unregulated thirst for profit among pharma companies…and the overall awfulness of our health care system that keeps us sicker and ever more dependent on pharmaceutical solutions

Yes, they were, as were ads for lawyers! But while I agree that in the big picture these ads do damage, pulling them now would probably result in collapse of network TV, or make them all the CW. SO much revenue now is from Big Pharma—especially news content. It’s also a free speech thing

Superstition TBS! From Atlanta. Became TBS. WOR in NY and WGN as well (though they are VHF stations).

It was played in full on World News Tonight right after a montage of people yelling at Republicans at town halls.

I covered the show then. You're both right. He was negotiating a new deal, Fox was meh, he got the hint, and left. Is there a chance he could've stayed? Sure. But probably not as co-equal to Seacrest. variety.com/2002/scene/m...

I get that there are many big, shocking stories every day now. But POTUS acting like a king and threatening anyone who bends to his will, while holding court as his minions comically praise him? That is THE huge, fundamental story of this moment. He is trying to become the dictator he said he would.

I watch Super Password daily, and Bert Convy is regularly making references to things from the 50s and 40s and noting how nobody remembers who they are (except his fellow Olds.) It happens....

(That way, you SHOULD be able to skip the ads-- though, heads up, sometimes those virtual DVRs will try to steer you to the VOD version of a show or movie because the network wants you watching their ads. You should be able to select "DVR version," though, if that happens)

What you watched was the FX on Demand version of AD ASTRA, which I can also get-- via YouTube TV (my 'cable' provider.') And cable on demand famously has unskippable ads.
One hack: If the movie is on FX on Demand, it'll probably air on FX network soon (AD ASTRA is on 3/1.) Just set DVR to tape it.

It does. AD ASTRA is not streaming on Hulu. It *is* available on demand via FX, which you get via your Hulu with Live TV plan. For convenience and easier search, it's all in the same interface. But if I go to stream AD ASTRA, I'm told "Sure-- you can watch if you upgrade to Live TV."

Listen to Meredith Viera talk about Cronkite partying with literal lampshades on his head. (Hit “skip for now” when asked to create an account)

Very much enjoyed last week's ep, which is why this announcement made me angry. I want to keep watching it, but if it's just going to put on random Trumpers who make news for saying racist things? Eh
