Rarely do I feel as dependent on someone else's mental well-being as cramped shoulder to shoulder on a bus with a man in camo. There's enough of a threat sensation to make me acutely aware of their slight tilt of head towards a tattoo on my arm. And even more so of empathy in the moment.
