I would find this really useful. I work on eleventh-century maritime activity and have sailed the routes I research, but I don’t really know how to go about incorporating this experience into my academic writing (it has been well-received in conference papers and posters, though).

I thought so too, but then I was hungry.

In Abergavenny itself I can recommend The Gaff (range of super tasty small plates and it’s around the corner from an amazing refill shop and cafe) but if it’s proper walking food you are after then the pubs in the outlying villages will be better than the pubs in town- The Bell in Skenfrith is good.

I missed this when it came out last month, and I wanted to say how much I appreciate this podcast. I learn a lot from each episode about how to navigate academia as an ECR, but also that people have different approaches and experiences to me which helps me see things in new ways. Thank you 🙂

Absolutely, and in later centuries too. Waterways were major arteries for travel and communication, I think we sometimes forget that these days when few people travel that way anymore.

Im doing this now: p/t PhD after a 2-year gap since MA (pandemic) & a decade gap before that since my MSc. I also have a child which means I don’t work on my PhD during school holidays in any meaningful way. Work when you can, ask for help, draw on all that life experience, & enjoy it. Good luck!

I’m so glad #drawingdiggingforbritain has come to Bluesky. It’s always something I look forward to in January, as well as the excellent Digging For Britain show of course.
