Francis Collins, the NIH Director for 12 years, led the Human Genome Project and other NIH efforts for 32 years, resigned today. Key words from his resignation letter www.nytimes.com/2025/03/01/u...

Not even the best satire writer in the world could have come up with “Red, White, and Blueland”

No longer a hypothetical question: What would happen if a bunch of hype-loving investors who didn’t really understand the nuts and bolts of AI took over the world?

Sometimes when building a minimal reprex for a bug, you discover that you were the bug all along. I assume this is what Kafka was on about.

Just posting this picture of an iron lung at University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health, for no particular reason. Jonas Salk was pretty dope. #VaccinesSaveLives

“I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo. "So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” ― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

When I was a young man there were whispered rumors among the elders that they could remember their own elders talking about a time when getting grants had been a means for doing science, rather than vice versa.

We need more of this in congress, and everywhere else: courage to do what’s right instead of what’s convenient or safe

I loved meeting up with old friends and learning new things at #JMM2025 but the lack of internet is a serious problem. Normally I can hobble along with cell service but can’t get more than one bar in most parts of the conf center. Really frustrating! #mathsky

I genuinely cannot believe Google is now showing Gemini-generated medical snippets including *drug summaries and medical advice* to treatserious health conditions. I checked. It does. With barely a tiny disclaimer about GenAI. How can a (formerly?) trusted company be so incredibly reckless?

Clever.

On second thought, the internet was a mistake

A huge congrats to Ingrid Daubechies on this well deserved honor!! today.duke.edu/2025/01/ingr...

how i'd learn machine learning in 2025 if i had to start from scratch: 1. find a log that i initially planned to turn into a table leg 2. make it into a puppet that can walk and talk 3. have the puppet, through a series of adventures, turn into a real boy and realize the true value of friendship

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't liberate him from the terrifying prison of consciousness

The world is a LOT better for children than it was 50 years ago. ourworldindata.org/child-mortal...

The math benchmarks I want: 1. OopsBench: given a faulty proof with numbered steps, which step contains an unfixable logical flaw? 2. DunnoMath: half the problems are taken from FrontierMath, half are almost certainly unsolvable. Major points off for guessing an answer to an unsolvable problem.

It's a great day to remember that, despite the upsurge in some chronic diseases, humans have on average never lived happier, healthier lives than they do today. You're very lucky to be alive in 2024 and not 1924!

New phenomenon where students show up with a chunk of ChatGPT code and say "it doesn't work" and I say, "well what did you try?" and they explain the different things they asked ChatGPT. It's pretty worrying

I am. I am.

Hi BlueSky math! I need the power of our community to share this! CURM has extended its deadline. Who wants money to do undergraduate research? we got it!! please please spread the word and I will be happy to answer any questions. urmath.org/curm/

The flu vaccine is an important vaccine. There is no reason to skip or downplay this vaccine because polio or meningitis might be more serious. It still saves lives. www.voicesforvaccines.org/trust-me-you...

I grew up visiting my grandparents' dairy & poultry farm. I saw the precautions my grandparents took when they milked cows. I also saw the 'puss' & blood in the unpasteurized milk. Nope.

Kids are dying of measles. Not because their parents are refusing the MMR vaccine, but because it simply isn't available. Vaccines are amazing. Ineffective governments & supply chains too often get in the way. www.nytimes.com/2024/12/18/h... 🧪🩺🛟 @nytimes.com

Since everyone’s finding old and new friends, take a moment to read my story, I’m a 32yo polio survivor because I was not vaccinated. Pass on my story, repeat it, tell it to any vaccine hesitate parent. No kid deserves vaccine preventable diseases www.voicesforvaccines.org/as-a-polio-s...

Every year at NeurIPS, I get a sense of where the community is headed. I'm so happy that the era of larger language models on larger datasets is coming to an end.

A lot of things suck in this lifetime, but I remember when the thought of this was incomprehensible. This is beautiful.
