One of my firefighters asked me why I hadn't applied for the new full-time Deputy Chief position that is open rn and, I have to admit, it's been banging around my skull all week. Firefighting or a mindless disassociated computer-brain future. Hmmm. 🤔

My new program is 90% written with a few videos. Many people prefer video lessons, but unfortunately for them, I don't. By the time I'm done I assume you'll be able to drop it in AI and say "make me a video lesson version of this taught by a chimp that kinda looks like typeoneerror" so 🤷‍♂️

🌶️ Bit of a spicy take on the NM blog this week: What is Notion not so good for? The use-case I often try to steer folks away from?Bookkeeping. Spreadsheets are just better! Notion's a power-house when it comes to synthesizing data, planning, and reporting, but should you do everything in Notion?

How do you accept an apology from that which cannot feel regret, nor understand harm, nor learn or adapt—does not "know"? Who originated the harm implied by the apology? The company that built the model? Self-inflicted? We might want to consider what "I will strive to do better" means. Who strives?

Why "I'm just guessing here..." when you can "I ran the numbers and worked with an AI model to help synthesize public benchmarks and run a directional analysis..."

zooming out a little bit, it does feel alarming to me that a lot of people whose stated politics are progressive or socialist or both are willing to give huge tech companies an easy ride for fully seizing the means of production for everyone, no matter where you personally work

The deer antler velvet was particularly delightful.

Architecting Workspaces, my nerdy Notion workspace-building toolkit and guide is starting to feel a little more real with some Notion Mastery-style design from @mariepoulin.com in place.

I find the demand that we need "better AI criticism" to be so funny. Like, what do you want us to do, do less historicizing? Focus more on the tech and not structural forces which lead to the tech? My friends, that's how we got into this mess to begin with.

I just got my first pair of prescription glasses. Q for you long-time glasses ppl: do you get vertigo when you move your head around? Super blurry vision when taking them off. Normal stuff I need to get used to?

I would like to stop paying taxes for healthcare in BC. I now not only don't have a family doctor, but our "walkin" clinic now no longer does walkins. At this point you cannot consider this healthcare, it is deathcare. Those of us with no family docs need a tax rebate.

I think if you're not going nuts while trying to get your head around what AI is doing to us, you're not having a healthy reaction. Interesting treatise.

Every tech oligarch wants to build an Everything App - because they now have the power to do so, but also because they're completely out of ideas. This week's issue tackles the rise of the "data-driven" Nothing Manager responsible for building Everything. productpicnic.beehiiv.com/p/the-everyt...

Cursor works for maybe a single super simple refactor. Then it gets confused about what code is actually in the file, and tries to remove code that doesn't exist. Even when asking it to re-read the file, context is hosed. The casino is rigged. 🎰

1-2 a week. A week. Wait, A WEEK?! My god I want to live in the average Notion user's world.

First Barker album since 2019's glorious Utility. Another AOTY right out the gate. Hard to pick a favorite track! 🖤

Me too. I also notice how much more chill I am in my life compared to the attention wave riders. I defaulted to extreme coherence (I blame anxiety disorder) for most of my life. Elasticity is the name of the game, though; sometimes ride, sometimes bail. Sometimes watching the surfers is enjoyable.

Productive day today. Used AI to spec out the next generation of fall protection for firefighters operating on roofs. The Reverse-Gravity Positioning System (RGPS) is revolutionary, but the quantum stabilization system means they're $40MM a pop to develop. Looking for serious investors, DMs open.
