And I guess this applies to Butch, Sunni, Don and Nick up on the International Space Station. What happens if they are busy you know with actual work and don't complete this on time? Do they get fired? And if the DO get fired, does that mean that the "rescue mission" is off? Asking for a friend.

Wait. It gets worse: "The new document states that the revenues will be directed to a fund in which the United States holds 100 percent financial interest, and that Ukraine should contribute to the fund until it reaches $500 billion....The US has allocated $119 billion for aid to Ukraine."

Great piece by @adamserwer.bsky.social. Reminder that this isn’t the first time the federal workforce has been resegregated: Woodrow Wilson’s 1913 order to impose Jim Crow rolled back almost half a century of progress that saw Black people working at every level of the federal government.

Case in point because perhaps you are not aware of it. It’s actually Poland who bought really lots of Starlinks for Ukraine. Poland pays subscription fees for Ukraine. It’s a business arrangement. Would the U.S. try to cancel it…?

“‘Some patients will go home undetected and they will spread more deadly, multidrug-resistant TB,’ said Margaret Odera, a local community health worker. ‘Viruses and bacteria don’t need passports to travel.’”

This is fascinating: “In December the [Turkish] government began work on a spaceport in Somalia, a project that has been projected to cost $350m.”

Read the real stories about what USAID cuts mean, not the Musk propaganda www.nytimes.com/2025/02/21/o...

Great resource here to counter the message that we don’t need the Department of Education.

“The US government has indicated it will drop a long-running case against Elon Musk’s SpaceX…The Department of Justice’s move comes as Musk, who has repeatedly criticised the case, takes an increasingly prominent role in President Donald Trump’s administration..”

If you are a scientist or policy expert working on something related to climate or the environment, and your work has been impacted by these cuts, either directly or indirectly, and you want to tell @thebulletin.org about it, you can email me [email protected] (or [email protected])

Jim is a remarkable leader, consensus builder, and public servant. Incredibly grateful for his decades of work advancing NASA’s mission. 🇺🇸

NASA data at work: “Researchers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory documented how the landslides have pushed westward, almost doubling in area since the state mapped them in 2007. The landslides have also sped up in recent years.”

Russia’s executions of Ukrainian prisoners point to systematic policy.

#JWST, NIRCam captured protostars in Orion. you can see nice outflows, some in form of jets. HOPS 383, the source of the red jets below image-center, was the first discovered jet-emitting protostar, and there is also x-ray coming from there, if you know the mechanics please reply.

Meryl Streep will live forever.

Nothing says promoting transparency like…firing the team who handles FOIA requests.

Can’t we have any nice things? Truly the end of an era.

Thinking of all my former NASA colleagues today. Know it’s going to be a tough one, but we are out here rooting for you. ❤️

If you or friends/colleagues are facing redundancy, check out opportunities at @spacetelescope.bsky.social. The institute has vacancies in a number of areas - data science, software, engineering, administrative support, grants admin and more. #baltimore recruiting2.ultipro.com/SPA1004AURA/...

"It is clear that the US can no longer be regarded as a reliable ally for the Europeans. But the Trump administration’s political ambitions for Europe mean that, for now, America is also an adversary — threatening democracy in Europe and even European territory..."

It’s expected that the #NASA family will be torn asunder this week, with a substantial number of the best and brightest in this nation tossed like scraps by wolves, for political and cronyistic purposes. This is a travesty.

Musk is brazenly using his government position and USG resources to advance his private financial interests. “Modi’s discussion with [Musk] is expected to center on AI policy, Starlink’s expansion into India and Tesla’s ability to open up a plant in the country, the government official said.”

The fact that this is what the Trump Admin is spending its rapidly diminishing political capital on in Europe speaks volumes about their priorities. on.ft.com/41f6oJz

We only know this man is in Gitmo because Noem tweeted a propaganda photo that included him and his sister saw it. He has no criminal record. He entered the US in January and immediately made an appointment with CBP to claim asylum. They sent him to a concentration camp bc of his basketball tattoo.

Now is absolutely the wrong time for the U.S. to retreat from international space cooperation.

This is really extremely bad: withholding urgent public health studies because they’re not convenient for the president’s political narrative.

I wrote about NASA, its people and the mission to connect us. slate.com/technology/2...

I honestly believe our most powerful position in a toxic time that feeds on cynicism, apathy,& despair is to genuinely care and act for a better world. Cynicism is our enemy. We should check it, incl. on the left. It’s not intellectually superior. It’s the virus they’re trying to infect us with. NO

Another extremely effective and impactful program preparing the next generation for scientific careers is undermined, to the detriment of the students and America’s future. “All of the students who became involved with H2O last fall continued into the spring semester and remained STEM majors.”

Undercutting American competitiveness for decades to come: “For academic scientists, the list of banned activities could include efforts to increase diversity in the scientific workforce, collaborations with foreign scientists, and research on more environmentally friendly technologies.”

Today is #NASA's "Day of Remembrance" where the agency pauses to honor those who have paid the ultimate price in humanity's reach for the stars, including of the crew's of #Apollo1, #STS51L , and #STS107. This NASA Press Release gives today's events - www.nasa.gov/news-release...

For no particular reason, revisiting these wonderful #NASA graphic novels this morning.

Devastating for scientists and their research, and everyone who benefits from that research. I’m not sure if everyone outside academia is aware that a delay or “pause” in grant funding often means the researchers themselves are lost from the field, along with their expertise.

Strongly recommend this piece from Audrey Schaffer on the importance of maintaining space policy coordination across the Executive Branch.

“While the richest 1% now own 45% of global wealth, 44% of humanity lives on less than $6.85 per day, and global poverty rates have barely changed since 1990, the report said... The wealth of the richest 10 billionaires grew by $100 million per day on average, over the last 10 years.”

Dolly turns 79 today. She and David Lynch were born one day apart.

It is truly remarkable how TikTok has managed to move from being labeled a national security concern by a bipartisan majority in Congress to a potential earned media placement in an Inaugural Address in such a short period of time.

Use encryption, people!

Big day in space news! "It makes India just the fourth country, after the United States, Soviet Union/Russia and China, to complete a docking of two spacecraft in orbit."

A huge congrats to the Blue Origin team! A huge accomplishment.

The JPL community has suffered unimaginable loss due to the fires devastating Southern California. I know there is so much need right now, but Caltech and JPL have set up a fund to support the team and their families who have lost their homes this week.

Remember: It’s always more important to identify actors from their previous roles than it is to watch the current movie on your screen.

NEW: 2024 has just been confirmed as the warmest year on record, and the first to breach the 1.5C threshold. We used a ridgeline (Joy Division inspired) chart to visualise daily temperature anomalies since 1940. 2024 clearly stands out with 100% of its days above 1.3C and 75% above 1.5C.

Just incredible.

Occasional reminder that there’s no, “it’s too late, its over” for anthropogenic climate change. Every molecule of CO2 that doesn’t go into the atmosphere makes a difference. Preventing 0.1 degree of warming makes a difference. Every bit of climate resilience we build together makes a difference.

Very well deserved!
