Just in: Prosecutors ask a judge to dismiss Mahmoud Khalil's habeas petition in SDNY because he was never detained there. Feds say the judge could also send it to the Western District of Louisiana, where Khalil is currently housed. *In WDLA, 4 of 12 judges are Trump appointees.

New: A member of the Russian mob testified that he tried to shoot Iranian journalist Masih Alinejad outside of her Brooklyn home. But he blew a stop sign and got pulled over by the cops. Now, he’s flipped on his alleged co-conspirators:

Andrew Cuomo appears to approve of the Trump Admin's efforts to deport Mahmoud Khalil. ⬇️

Lawyers for Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian Columbia grad who the Trump administration is trying to deport for leading campus protests against Israel, told a judge that they are having trouble reaching their client from his detention center. @uebey.bsky.social www.courthousenews.com/palestinian-...

NOW: A hearing in Manhattan federal court over the arrest of Mahmoud Khalil. The judge opens by saying he's going to make the docket OPEN on Pacer; it's normally sealed for immigration cases like this. Following live for @CourthouseNews 🧵 (📸 @jrussjruss.bsky.social)

Prosecutors say Iran put two men up to killing journalist Masih Alinejad. Their key witness is the would-be hitman, who says he once burned down a restaurant three times in a row and kidnapped a businessman’s son for a $1 million ransom.

Mike Johnson told @benjaminweiss.bsky.social that Mahmoud Khalil's arrest was an attempt to "lay down the law." But... "Johnson did not answer questions about whether Khalil had committed a crime that justified his arrest or detention."

NOW: Two men who planned to “gun down” journalist and Iranian exile @AlinejadMasih in her Brooklyn home are facing a murder-for-hire trial in SDNY. Prosecutors say the Iranian government agreed to pay them $500,000 to do it. Opening statements 🧵

Alright, I got Mahmoud Khalil's full habeas corpus petition now. The whole thing is linked below. ⬇️

Newer: Mahmoud Khalil "shall not be removed from the U.S. unless and until the court orders otherwise," rules U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman. He sets a conference for Wednesday.

Now, a sea of protestors are across the street from the courthouses protesting the ICE arrest of Mahmoud Khalil.

New: Mahmoud Khalil files a petition slamming his ICE arrest as a "blatant" effort to "target and chill" his criticism of Israel. "The U.S. government has made clear that they will use immigration enforcement as a tool to suppress that speech." www.courthousenews.com/palestinian-...

Mahmoud Khalil says he is a legal resident. The Trump administration is holding him in an ICE detention facility, claiming he engaged in "pro-terrorist, anti-American" activity during 2024 protests. @uebey.bsky.social www.courthousenews.com/palestinian-...

BREAKING: C.C. passed her training exam and then took a nap.

Eric Adams' criminal case should be permanently dismissed, argued an appointed lawyer with the judge's ear. But the DOJ says it should only be dropped if it can potentially re-indict Adams in the future. The latest:

Just in: The DOJ is sticking by its assertion that the case should be dismissed without prejudice — meaning they should be able to potentially re-indict in the future.

If you remember, Eric Adams also made his own motion to dismiss last month -- WITH prejudice. The DOJ's deadline to respond to that is also tonight. Should be interesting...

Wow. The independent, court-appointed lawyer in the Eric Adams case says that the DOJ shouldn't be allowed to dismiss his case without prejudice. He says it needs to be dismissed FOR GOOD.

Donald Trump is now trying to dissuade further lawsuits against his executive actions by ordering the heads of departments to demand that plaintiffs post security. This comes after Trump got two scathing preliminary injunctions issued against him in the past 24 hours.

Another judge just indefinitely blocked Trump's OMB federal funding freeze via preliminary injunction. It's the 2nd big loss for Trump in court in 24 hours. Yesterday, a judge granted an injunction that blocked his $4 billion cuts to medical research.

After the month that Emil Bove has had (re: Eric Adams), he is now officially demoted to 3rd in command at the DOJ.

News: A judge ruled that Donald Trump's $4 billion cuts to medical research present "pressing, irreparable harm" to thousands of patients. "It is impossible to accurately measure or compensate humans who lose their lives from a pause in research."

NEW: How much magic can one promise consumers before it’s criminal fraud? The Second Circuit tackles this pressing issue. “The difference between those items is merely the magic,” a public defender told the court.

Donald Trump still wants his Manhattan criminal case removed to federal court, despite the fact that he was already sentenced in January. He just asked the Second Circuit for oral arguments.

Miles Guo, a convicted fraudster and buddy of Steve Bannon, was just back in court, where he blew kisses to the gallery in his tan prison jumpsuit. His sentencing is indefinitely delayed as he tries to change counsel. "I hope we can get that resolved soon," the judge said.

New: 14 ex-judges tell the Eric Adams judge that he should appoint a special prosecutor if the DOJ refuses to prosecute. “Public confidence in the criminal justice system will be diminished if the Court grants leave to dismiss the indictment against NYC Mayor Eric Adams.”

Blake Lively wanted Justin Baldoni's phone records dating back to 2022, but a judge ruled that would be "overly intrusive." "According to Lively's complaint, this negative campaign did not begin until approximately August 2024," the judge said.

Blake Lively can’t subpoena Justin Baldoni’s phone records dating back to 2022, a judge just ruled. Lively wanted the records to learn about Baldoni’s alleged smear campaign against her, but the judge said the subpoena was “overly intrusive.”

Rudy Giuliani still doesn’t have a personal lawyer in his sexual harassment case, per a filing from his business attorney. Back in October, a judge strongly urged him to find personal counsel after Giuliani lobbed insults at his accuser in a Zoom meeting.

New: The MTA and New York officials won't be abiding by Trump's March 21 deadline to ax congestion pricing. To stop the toll, he'll have to beat them in court. "The cameras are staying on," said one Hochul spox.

Eric Adams is blaming turmoil at City Hall — the resignations of 4 deputy mayors and renewed calls for him to step down — on the leaked resignation letter of Danielle Sassoon. "All this was caused by the government’s decision to leak the Feb. 12 letter and its falsehoods."

NYC Mayor Eric Adams makes his own move to dismiss ‘meritless’ federal charges — permanently @uebey.bsky.social www.courthousenews.com/nyc-mayor-er...

Whoa! Mayor Eric Adams just filed his own motion to dismiss his federal case. He says the leaked Danielle Sassoon resignation letter prejudiced him. He wants the case dropped WITH PREJUDICE — meaning the Trump Admin couldn’t hang the charges over his head.

New: Eric Adams can stay for now. But Gov. Kathy Hochul didn't rule out booting him out City Hall in the future. "I will never surrender power that I have," Hochul said Thursday.
