The administration’s key demand is not just that they can send anyone they like to a foreign labor camp, it’s that you will accept without question their assertion that the people they choose are dangerous menaces who deserve it. They want your unquestioning obedience.

Quite the rebuke. Federal court: "Secretary [Noam]’s actions appear predicated on negative stereotypes casting class-wide aspersions." Orders postponement of DHS decision to terminate the status of over 600,000 Venezuelan nationals who have legal status to reside and work temporarily in US.

They’re using the carceral system eagerly built over decades to do exactly what people told you they’d do while people were eagerly building it.

Attorney General Pam Bondi says Justice Department is seeking a *20 year* prison sentence for 24 year old Colorado man accused of vandalizing a Tesla dealership

Trump's 3/27 executive order targets the Smithsonian for advancing "the view that race is not a biological reality but a social construct." Trump argues that the exhibit's statement, below, is unscientific. He's wrong. As a biology professor and population geneticist, I agree with every word of it.

I have my issues with Booker as a politician, and we arguably ought to be seeing this kind of action from Dem senators more routinely under these circumstances—but the reality is, he's alone out there, and deserves some encouragement.

as it turns out there are worse options than hypocrisy, politically speaking

ICERAID crypto project claims to pay people to report immigrants and "terrorist" judges to law enforcement March 30, 2025 https://www.web3isgoinggreat.com/?id=iceraid

there are those in this world with only evil in their soul

if you think this violates the law (and it very clearly does imo), you don't seek an injunction, you seek an indictment, given that the law makes it a class 1 felony. cowardice from the AG, cowardice from the courts, nobody wants the responsibility of actually enforcing the law. cowards all around

Worth sharing with alt text. Brian Eno's response to the Quaker arrests.

Also, a woman was handcuffed at a subway station in NYC (Franklin Ave) when she intervened asking why a delivery man was asked to show work permit by undercover agents. There is a video of that.

Dear @tonyromm.bsky.social can we not refer to Russell Vought's Christian values without mentioning that he seeks to throw people into poverty, crush the ability to develop new cures for diseases, attack immigrants-hardly "Christian" values. Giving him a pass on piety, unscrutinized, is stenography.

TBH the study really shows academia is too solicitous of conservative propaganda. The liberal views are beliefs / opinions; the conservative "belief" of "widespread voter fraud" is objectively false, yet 47.6% of academics would permit that delusion / lie to be taught to undergraduates.

Our hearts are with Myanmar today. Also filled with tremendous sorrow and shame for our country that USAID isn't there to help.

I'm not a particularly fancy man, but I've been in academia a long time, and I don't recall "don't ever discuss material that's extraneous to the class" ever having been mentioned as a "core tenet" of academic freedom.

1. Another Friday afternoon massacre of sorts: NIH just rescinded its Scientific Integrity Policy. h/t @lizborkowski.bsky.social

One of many moments in Omar El Akkad’s new book, “One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This,” that will stop you in your tracks.

that this was a significant if not primary motivating goal of Trump's presidency was clear as soon as the TRUMP$ memecoin was launched, and emphatically underscored by Musk and DOGE's infiltration of the Treasury and the creation of the "strategic" Bitcoin reserve

One hell of an opening for this @tressiemcphd.bsky.social piece www.nytimes.com/2025/03/29/o...

Yes. But I think we in the media are at fault here. We are creating the impression that being “smart” about politics means understanding how a policy will be assessed by swing voters in Wisconsin, as opposed to understanding the policy itself.

We have had nearly two decades of panic about Free Speech on Campus and not a single case, not even the ones they made up, were as bad as what's happening now

it’s true that a lot of major universities and law firms have the resources to fight back against these awful executive orders it’s also true that many of them are run by powerful people who are delighted to have an excuse to go after a bunch of people they’ve always resented having to listen to

We’ve GOT to work on a thorough list of the DOJ lawyers who have done evil and dishonest things for this administration.

reading an old interview of chelsea manning from early 2016 rn and it's astounding how well she nailed the current political climate in america nearly a full decade later.

Breaking: RFK Jr. has forced out PETER MARKS, the nation’s top vaccine regulator. In his resignation letter, obtained by the Post, Marks said he was willing to work with RFK Jr on his vaccine concerns — but said Kennedy wishes “subservient confirmation of his misinformation and lies.”

A Skadden attorney resigned today, citing the firm’s decision to strike a deal with Trump amid pressure campaign on law firms. “[I]f my employer cannot stand up for the rule of law, then I cannot ethically continue to work for them,” the former Skadden lawyer, Brenna Trout Frey, wrote on LinkedIn.

WOW. I heard about this earlier today from people at the hearing. This is in the case of the Venezuelan couple arrested in DC for crossing the border two years after it happened. Outrageously, the government apparently tried to claim they were Tren de Aragua members! And the judge had NONE of it.

shorter version:

RFK is a eugenics freak first and foremost and everything falls downstream from that. he *wants* excess deaths. he thinks that only the "fit" should survive.

His fake "petition" is limited to registered voters, and paying people to register is just as much a crime as paying them to vote, so all he's doing here is committing the same crime in a different way.

An inspirational message from President Trump to all the people of the United States of America.

A very old Soviet joke, from an especially dark time: Foxes are fleeing the USSR in droves. Q: Why are you running away? Fox: The Soviets passed a new law that they’re going to arrest all camels. Q: But you’re foxes! Fox: Yeah, why don’t *you* try proving to the NKVD that you’re not a camel.

I was inspired almost to tears by a recent temporary exhibit at the Maritshuis museum in the Dutch capital, on how the staff resisted the Nazis during the WWII occupation, removing key works to hidden storage and protecting Jewish staff

Disappeared Tufts Human Dev. PhD student Rumesya Ozturk is also a graduate of Teachers College - she’s a dev. psychologist studying children’s media & prosocial development. She also bakes without recipes and binge-watches cartoons. She is our colleague & she was abducted on the street w/ our tax $.

As predicted, they’re coming for NMAAHC www.whitehouse.gov/fact-sheets/...

One thing that is fairly clear at this point is that the entire point of whisking people out of the country with no due process in defiance of a judge's orders to put them into a foreign gulag *was so they could produce fascist content*.

There are many wild things in Trump's EO about History but one that especially caught my eye was the complaint that the American Art Museum promoted the view that "race is not a biological reality." It's not! That's a true statement! The idea that race is biological was the foundation of racism!

I don't know what in Turkey's internal politics makes the timing of this intelligible, but it's hard not to think that authoritarians & autocrats all over the place are being emboldened by the democratic crisis of the US.

The performative cruelty is the point, because they absolutely cannot do this at any scale. We're being ruled by a group of hucksters who only know how to huck. That's all Trump and Musk have ever been good at. They're trying to cargo cult authoritarianism built entirely out of PR stunts.
