This means that the difference won't be discovered until it comes up in play. And then, since they believe their storytelling or theater or whatever is the definition of TTRPG, when I say that's not what I'm after, they think that *I've* lied to *them*.

So we'll both say words like "roleplaying game" but they actually mean something else (like storytelling or theater), and they just assume that I'm ALSO talking about that other thing, because they don't understand that there are other options, that "roleplaying game" has a literal meaning.
comment in response to post
That's the next layer: they don't *know* they're speaking in code. They get it in their head that "roleplaying game" means something else than a literal game-of-roleplaying, and then they assume that's what everyone else means when they say it too.

that's the real problem: not that the storyfuckers *exist*, but that they refuse to share the space they change all the road signs to point to themselves, so any attempt to find people like myself just gets them instead

yeah but the words which literally describe the experience i want, have been stolen to serve as code-words for experiences i don't want i don't want to get three sessions in with a new group and then have them yell at me because i'm doing exactly what we all said instead of what they secretly meant

then i tell myself i'd be less focused on the problems if i got back into a regular game, so i think "yeah, i'll do that" but then this happens โฌ‡๏ธ bsky.app/profile/unbo...

that's also why it's hard not to pipe up when people spread that disinformation about ttrpgs being inherently a form of improv or storytelling, despite knowing how they typically handle even the gentlest resistance

Listen to the podcast Roar to Heaven to hear it in action, or check out the free quickstart here: peachgardengames.itch.io/blazing-hymn... Yes I am obsessed with Symphogear no I will not apologize for writing Symphogear: The RPG

yes i get what you're saying, i'm disagreeing with you anyway but it sounds like maybe you're not someone who handles informed disagreement well, so i guess there's no need to talk any further

i know nothing of daggerheart so i can't comment on the validity of that complaint, but as for the general assertion that ttrpgs are a variant of improv theater, no, that's not correct, improv and roleplay are two different things

truly your most recyclable/memeable piece of all time

first thought: look at the paintings, see what they depict second thought: smash the pots with my sword while yelling HYAAAA and grab whatever's inside

i mean, i *want* to agree with you, but i think there's still room for repetition of the universal basics to be valuable/useful
comment in response to post
yeah yeah that's spell durations not encumbrance, same difference
comment in response to post
One time I had a PF1 character who relied on multiple buffs with varying durations, so I was tracking everything on scrap paper and tallying elapsed time based on every action everyone declared. Someone asked how long we'd been there & before I could say "almost 10 min" the GM said "about an hour" ๐Ÿ™ƒ

I'd rather we just said "in-universe." Like instead of "trigger this mechanic when you do XYZ in the fiction," just say "trigger this mechanic when you do XYZ in-universe."

A bird might shriek to warn of danger, but a safe and happy bird still chirps, because that's what birds do. Making art, playing games, and many other things are like human birdsong. Fight when you can. Escape when you must. But don't forget to be human every chance you get. 4/4
comment in response to post
Fighting and escapism are unfortunate temporary necessities, not the purpose of art and play as concepts. We fight or escape because we currently must. But we still sometimes play or create even when not fighting or escaping, because play and creation are Human To Do. 3/๐Ÿงต
comment in response to post
To put it another way: When the battles are won and people are free to live in peace and do as they please, when there's no longer a need for fighting or escaping, humans will still play games and make art. These things are simply Human To Do. 2/๐Ÿงต
