The Baboons & CGI moments did take me out of it, but otherwise I think you're missing the broader messages. The parallels to present day and Denzel's performance, along with his entire arc were excellent and unique. Great film for fans of the original.

This is key to your take. If the OG (Original Gladiator ™️) is sub-par in your eyes, then the sequel probably isn't for you. Did it follow the same formula? Yes. Did it also intro very unique plot elements? Also yes. Was it arguably paced better than the original? I'd argue yes.
