I wonder where the self-ordained "Free Speech" Warriors are when our colleagues are being told by management they can't discuss the fact that same management are about to screw them over?

Incitement much? “There are some places where, when people behave in that way, a mob turns up and burns their homes down, and then they know that they can’t do that sort of thing,” says Badenoch www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025...

Left: Mel Stride, "Kemi has very clear direction.. She knows what he conservative principles are" Right: That time Kemi Badenoch admitted to breaking the law and then laughed about it

AOC: “Oh, I don’t think we’re witnessing the START of an oligarchy. I think we are fully here.” 🇺🇸

Richard Tice in 2018 on George Soros' donation to UK political groups: "He doesn't live here. He doesn't pay taxes here. What right has he got to interfere with our democracy?" Richard Tice in 2024 ahead of Elon Musk's donation to Reform UK: "If Mr Musk can legally donate... We'd be delighted."

UPDATE: NYPD have arrested at least two of those faculty members. Arrests ongoing!!

This seems like what national industrial action ballots should be called on tbh. Even if regressive TU law prevents national ballot on local redundancies (do they?) there must be a way of framing this as the key fight. Employers certainly frame redundancy and pay freezes as linked. #UKHE #UCU

The news coming out of Coventry is 🤯 Fire-and-Rehire: numerous staff are pushed onto teaching-only contracts via a subsidiary. They're made to re-interview for roles that will increase teaching and move them onto a different pension scheme: from TPS to AVIVA, with far lower employer contributions.

Everyone in Birmingham next time the Tory Party Conference is in town. #moistbread

Today! We will be joined by some wonderful poets who will be reading generously from their work and @khawlabadwan.bsky.social and I will speak about the process of writing and stunned language #Gaza #KeepTelling

Border controls against bodily autonomy

OHCHR says that speaking out on Gaza must be allowed, & express alarm at the worldwide wave of attacks, reprisals, criminalisation & sanctions against those who publicly express solidarity with the victims of the ongoing conflict between Israel & Palestine. www.ohchr.org/en/press-rel...

Enjoyed finally meeting @kevinsmets.bsky.social in person and hearing his @sociowarwick.bsky.social Research Seminar paper today, including getting to see one of the many brilliant short films about borders to come out of his ERC Reel Borders project: vimeo.com/783186118

yesterday our Derya Ozkul @deryaozkul.bsky.social and colleagues launched their collaborative 'Digitising Identity' project & held their first stakeholder event exploring how digitalisation impacts migrants' lives.👇🏽

When I got to the end of this article, I found myself choking back angry tears. Cruel artists (artists of cruelty). And an even more sadistic class of journalists and readers, who revel in the fruit vendor's distress. www.nytimes.com/2024/11/27/n...

20,000 (TWENTY-THOUSAND!!) are protesting the destructive and ideological cuts to Dutch Higher Education in The Hague at the moment. Legends, all of you. Brilliant to see the sector sticking together for each other like this. Sending much solidarity to #WOinActie

depressing but useful live overview of redundancies and restructures in HE from @qmucu.bsky.social (i'm darkly cackling at exeter calling their VS program the 'exeter release scheme')

Our book Brexit and Citizens' Rights is now out. We discuss Brexit and its impact on the rights of different groups of citizens: British, EU27, third country nationals, in the UK and in the EU.

The reality is representations urging Israel to stop the killing are ignored by Netanyahu & the Trump election gives signal to the IDF it can continue to act with impunity. Only a new boycott, disinvestment & sanctions strategy could have any effect. It should be a core demand on UK.

Really look forward to next IRIS (@irisbirmingham.bsky.social) talk with prof Hannah Jones (@uncomfiest.bsky.social). Hannah will be talking about student antiracist activism on 2 Dec, 3-4.30pm, Muirhead Tower, University of Birmingham. Book a place at www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/learning-f...

Jeremy Clarkson today has sought to argue he was only at the farmers' protest because he's angry for them. And he dismissed Victoria Derbyshire confronting him with his previous comments as "classic BBC". He challenges her on whether it's a fact he bought a farm to avoid Inheritance tax. 🧵

Culture wars are one thing, but a war on sandwiches? Actually, Sandwich Wars sounds like a winning concept for a reality TV show. 🪖🥪🤺 #WokeFillings

Good morning from the Midlands

The University of Leicester is setting the police on its own students who occupied a building to protest the university's ties to genocide. Eight were arrested on suspicion of aggravated trespass www.leicestermercury.co.uk/news/leicest...

Another merciless day adding to 13 months & 76 years of colonial genocide in Palestine. We cannot let this become ambient violence as the backdrop to 'normal' life. Our taxes make these massacres possible. #StopTheGenocideMachine

If you’re in the vicinity of Warwick University over the next 10 days, head over to the Faculty of Arts to have a look at Monstrous Reputation. Co-created with young men in prison. Inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry, Medieval bestiaries and ideas drawn from narrative criminology. #prisonarts
