11 May 1582: Richard Milton, a forest under-ranger from Stanton St John, Oxfordshire, is excommunicated as a recusant today, a victim perhaps of the anti-Catholic panic we've seen recently. His son John Milton will soon move to London and in due course become father to the poet. 1/ #earlymodern

A magnificent double-act by @helmer.bsky.social and Kerrewin van Blanken revealing who, why, and how had recruited Salmacius to produce the 'Defensio'!

"...curst be he that moves my bones." 🦴👀 An opportunity for a PhD student to hit the ground running here with publications, a fascinating project, and a truly brilliant teacher supervising. (My mum still talks about Philip's open day lecture from... a long time ago. It *was* great).

Delighted that the Guardian has publicised the prison education in Aristotle's ethics that I've been doing with @profarlenehh.bsky.social and others; we need more funding! theguardian.com/society/2025...

Lovely tributes to Prof Warren Chernaik at today's British Milton Seminar. As Thomas Corns put it, "Ladies and gentlemen, we've lost our gladiator."

"While properly solving the UK university crisis might be politically unpalatable, it is not difficult to solve in practical or policy terms." 👍

Here’s the thing: women outperform men academically; on most desireable leadership traits women tend to outperform men; women are less likely to display problematic work traits; women score higher on measures of leadership effectiveness. 1/2

If you find yourself in Chicago this May, please join us at the newly-reimagined Newberry Milton Seminar: www.newberry.org/calendar/joh...

Fascinating article below on the experience of academics from poorer backgrounds in higher education: under-representation in universities; more likely to never publish yet more likely to publish in top 1%; introduce more novel concepts yet less likely to receive recognition. 1/2
