I did stop once and help another cyclist fix their snapped chain, always carry a chain breaker and know how to use it.

This was a Viz Top Tip back in the day "CYCLISTS: Avoid getting a sore behind by simply placing a naan bread over your saddle. This will comfort your ride and when you return home, hey presto! A warm snack."

not just that they look like bike chains, but the lights are coloured for the route. Follow the purple route, purple lights (I was heading from Nijmegen to Arnhem), if you're going the other way the lights were a different colour.

Same brand/size of chainring/crank that was on before? Does it need a spacer between chainring/frame on the drive side to push the smaller chainring out slightly?

When driving I always give a wave of thanks to other drivers that don't pull out of junctions in front of me because I have the right of way, and they were courteous enough to follow the rules of the road and not crash into me and they deserve a "who's a good boy" validation That is the equivalent.
