>"How are they taking this photo? Don't worry about it." I'm sure someone in Post Town just invented photography. :)

Even then he was a lucky lastminute addition. '^^ My point was really just that Smash still touched upon the more quirky side of Nintendo's catalogue at all, not just what felt "necessary". Ness, a reimagined Pit, unexpected retro characters like Ice Climbers or ROB...

Which is also due to the franchise's spinoffs having grown infrequent in the first place; I get that there's no clear fatigue like with Smash, but what IS there instead is a fandom desperate to truly have a spinoff that takes full advantage of the franchise. TSR's roster was VERY middling.

That, and I think you're severely underestimating how starved for meaningful content a lot of these obscure characters' fandoms are. Marine and Gemerl got locked to mobile hell, someone like Chip even moreso as reduced to a mere item, and need I even mention the Freedom Fighters (extreme example).

You may look at the mainstream and say "but look at how far more hype THESE are", but at the end of the day, whether most of those people will even buy the game is entirely uncertain, whereas the IP's own audience would be far more certain IF they were satisfied. People ADORE Captain Falcon in Smash

I have seen this be argued time and time again, "why would you want this obscure character instead of MINECRAFT STEVE", and the answer is simple: crossovers need to feel earned. A Sonic spinoff that fails to take advantage of the gigantic Sonic franchise feels like it's using crossovers as a crutch.

Your argument is the perpetuation of the same exact cycle of thirdparties Smash itself has also gotten stuck on. It's easy to look at Sonic's Brawl reveal and say it was amazing when it was in an era where crossovers were UNCOMMON. Nowadays people are desperate for the likes of, say, Midna.

I can't believe the Nintendo game got weird and obscure Nintendo picks before non-Nintendo picks, but the Sonic game can't have weird and obscure Sonic picks before non-Sonic picks. :P

"biggest roster of Sonic characters" and it's really just a slightly bigger Riders roster. :) (Come on, man, where are the cool deep cuts? Smash Bros went through Ness and Pit before landing on your hedgehog)
