Check out the mating scars on this female reef shark. She may be courted and chomped by many males in a season and can birth a litter with multiple fathers. To withstand this affair, her skin is reinforced — in some species, three times as thick as the males’. Love bites. #MarineLife

Could you imagine the outcry if any terrestrial ecosystem was exploited in such a destructive manner?

I will forever be haunted by this footage. Trawling has only been filmed underwater a few times in documentary history, and never with such clarity. What’s so heart-rending about these shots is watching how the animals don’t just get swept up — they swim for their lives. 🌎🦑🧪

🚨🌍🌡📈 Using a 15-year trend, we have now officially passed 1.5°C of global warming. All recent La Niña months are above the trendline. Extrapolating this linear trend, we'll hit +1.75°C by 2031 and +2.0°C by 2037. ⬇️

I saw the critically endangered elkhorn coral in the Florida Keys for the first time. It filled me with an inexplicable combination of wonder, grief, and rage. Climate change is not a distant future threat. Our world is dying before our eyes. Extinction is forever. 🌎🦑🧪

Now that’s what I call abundance.

The threshold for the richest 10% of the world is $49K annual income. This is not to defend the rich by any means, but we must understand that those of us in industrialized countries *are* the rich, from a global perspective. We cannot hide from our responsibility.

Another of the many horrific clearcuts on our #publiclands, which I photographed on my flight with @lighthawk-org.bsky.social this past weekend. Many of these clearcuts are so recent that they have not showed up yet on satellite maps - the condition our forests is growing worse each and every day.

This southern stinger is just meters from my oblivious colleagues on the deck. Look around. We live among megafauna. Fishwatching will change your life. 🦑

I bring you exciting news... I FOUND THE FIRST EVER GIANT SPRINGTAILS IN CHRISTCHURCH! The closest population before this were at Arthur's Pass, but now we can add the Port Hills to their distribution. Definitely my best observation from the iNaturalist City Nature Challenge. #SoilBiodiversity🧪

I’m in disbelief at how shameless this article is. He actually calls the ranchers “cowboys” tending “lush pastures”… You can literally see the grazing damage at the fence line in this cover photo. LA Times is stenographing millionaire ranchers’ accusations trying to provoke kill orders from USDA.

One of the biggest citizen science studies ever conducted — if you logged an eBird sighting in N. America in the last 14 years, this paper represents your work and this alarm is all of our responsibility to sound: Avian life is slipping away. 🌎🧪 www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

This is a dangerous, reactionary tendency. The whole reason RFK has influence is because pop culture ridiculed grave toxicological crises on the word of for-hire science communicators like Bill Nye & NDT, bought by agro/petrochemical manufacturers despite having no biological expertise whatsoever.

It’s my first time TA’ing and holy fuck is it easy to tell when someone uses chatGPT.

Attenborough at 99: naturalist ‘goes further than before’ to speak out against industrial fishing in new film

It’s fun to joke about, but the courtship that crosses vast ocean basins to bring two turtles together after decades of solitude is one of the most profound love stories in the world. 🌎🦑🧪

My boy Opi died this weekend. He was the sweetest, most cuddly fish I’ve ever known. He lived a long life, considering his health conditions. By inbreeding bettas for white scales, breeders rendered Opi virtually blind and riddled him with tumors. Fuck the aquarium trade.

Dystopian is underselling it.

There it is — the quiet part out loud: The commercial and recreational fishing lobbies are joining forces to repeal the US shark finning ban, in retaliation against sharks for interfering with sport fishing.

Easy for me to say, since it’s not my livelihood, but… if I were a charter captain who was causing *fifty sailfish* to be killed by sharks every weekend, I’d think about fishing somewhere or for something else. Feels like the definition of insanity.

Antarctic krill fishing starves blue whales while drowning humpbacks. It burns four times the biomass it extracts in fossil fuel. You might think of krill oil supplements, but the primary demand for this fishery is fish and shrimp farms.

(1/2) Horrible news - The govt reported that they mistakenly killed the collared + presumed pregnant breeding female of the Bear Canyon Mexican gray wolf pack in AZ. She was killed pursuant to a removal order issued by USFWS for an uncollared wolf from the pack. How could an error like this occur?

At the first Earth Day at San Jose State in 1970, students raised money, bought a brand new Ford Maverick, and pushed it to campus to be entombed.

Earth Day was never meant to be a celebration. It was a revolt.
