👏"We found that regenerating cardiomyocytes experience DNA replication stress, which represents one reason for declining tissue #regeneration during aging in mammals. Inhibition of ATM and ATR kinases revealed that #DDR is essential for #zebrafish heart regeneration."🐟 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Check it out! My initial encounter with research and genetics was through drosophila! It is how and why I entered the scientific field. This type of outreach is tremendous.

Folks these times are unprecedented. Lots of labs won't be able to keep going given that there is no funds being released from the NIH (by and large, the little coming through is non-competing renewals). Once and *if* it all restarts, the delay is long enough to cost people their jobs /n

I feel like it is relevant information to share that I was invited last month to serve on an NIH study section that meets at the end of March, and I just got assigned my grants to review in IAR. Maybe this is wishful thinking it will still occur?

The "schedule" of upcoming National Advisory Council meetings (based on posted dates) No special meetings have been posted. These meetings must be announced at least 15 days in advance in the Federal Register Once communications and Federal Register posting bans are lifted these may change...

Looking for collaborators for our ENS work. If interested, please let me know.

ATTENTION (PLEASE SHARE) If anyone has or knows of any positions that might be appropriate for the NIH staff members who were terminated, please post the information in this thread. There are lots of talented and accomplished people who may be looking for new opportunities.

Our department received a continuing NOA today including the correct (negotiated) indirect rate. The funding blockade at the NIH appears to be partially relieved for now.

I will try to figure out about Councils that met. That should be discoverable. Study Sections do need to be published in the Federal Register to meet (even virtually)

Posting to bring some happier news to the community. We officially turned over the founding cohort of biomedical researchers from my lab at Rice University. Everyone in this '19 picture has moved on to great positions after their Ph.D. (4 of them!), Bachelor's, or training. #ProudPI

I know things are uncertain right now, but putting this out there. Does anyone know of job opportunities for recently graduated undergrads, with substantial lab experience? This can include laboratory technician, postbacc, lab manager, or more. We have some fantastic soon-to-be graduates from Rice.

We welcomed two new lab members in 2024! Please join me in welcoming graduate student Dean Parenteau and postdoc Tulip Chandra to the ENS field. Dean is working on ENS neurogenesis, and Tulip is working on ENS glial development! #devbio #zebrafish

It's time to educate our neighbors about the importance of science funding. Local news papers still exist and are read by folks. Here is the op-ed I wrote for this week's "News of Orange", a local paper in Orange Co NC. Full text is on the alt-text 🧪

Query from Slack: Does anyone in the US have a dominant negative integrin (β1) construct under a heat-shock promoter that they could share? Any leads would be thoroughly appreciated! #AskZebrafish

Birth defects are the #1 cause of death in the first year of life (🧵). Birth defects kill more than twice as many children as cancer. Birth defects are diseases of developmental biology. Here are CDC statistics for 2021. 1/5 wisqars.cdc.gov/pdfs/leading...

Thanks! It’s been awhile since we had a cover!

NSF’s cash management service is now back up and running. Seems like they responded to the court order. new.nsf.gov/executive-or...

Hello everyone! Differentiation has arrived on Bluesky! We are the flagship journal for the International Society of Differentiation with EICs- Loydie Jerome-Majewska, Crystal Rogers (@rogerslabucd.bsky.social), and Rosa Uribe @uribelab.bsky.social). Please consider us when you are submitting!

👇 This is why studying processes in non-mammalian (and invertebrate!) systems is important. Just because something does not exist or occur in mammals does not necessarily mean it is not important. On the contrary, all the more reason to double down and study it in great detail!

Proud to wrap up 2024's Differentiation issues! We had an awesome variety of science topics published, and it could not have been possible without authors, reviewers, guest editors, and our editorial board! Looking forward to 2025! www.sciencedirect.com/journal/diff...

Congrats to Noah on this preprint! "Specific SOX10 enhancer elements modulate phenotype plasticity and drug resistance in melanoma". Appreciate comments as we work through peer review. biorxiv.org/cgi/content/...
