The DOGE chainsaw just hit a huge spike!
Emergency ruling by federal judge in California has temporarily shut down the illegal overhaul of the federal government, including attacks on NIH and NSF.

Congrats to postdoc Grace Bonson & team! And thanks to our sponsors and the Shock society for both the trainee award at the Annual Conference on Shock and the opportunity to publish in @shockjournal.bsky.social. This was made possible by funding from #NIH #NIGMS #NHLBI.

Histone levels are increased in the blood in #trauma and #sepsis. We found that blocking the scramblase TMEM16f prevented pro-thrombotic activation of endothelial cell plasma membranes caused by histone exposure. Could this be a therapeutic target?

TMEM16f is also an #ionchannel. Blocking it prevented endothelial cell calcium release produced by histone exposure.

Scott’s syndrome is considered a #platelet disease caused by defects in TMEM16f, but knocking this out in platelets does not cause bleeding problems. In contrast, we found that knocking out TMEM16f in #vascular endothelial cells prevents normal #bloodclotting.

“If the goal were to identify and address problems at these agencies in a good-faith manner, that would be one thing. But what is going on is akin to performing open-heart surgery on a patient who is not particularly sick using a blunt axe.”

LOL! It’s like musical chairs, move people from the waiting room into the ER and then back out to optimize use of space. I guess it could work!

That’s a step backwards. Evidence supports moving patients out of the ER to board in the hallways or waiting areas of their admission unit, closer to the providers who can best care for them.

Thanks to #FASEB and #ASBMB for fighting for #science! FASEB’s Capitol Hill day was a well-coordinated effort to advocate for science and provide important information about #NIH and #NSF to our representatives in Congress.
