We should start to protest every single COP - governments refuse to be legally bound by the agreements its just another delaying tactic while they kick the can down the road

"Not a single major scientific organization or national academy of science on earth denies that the climate is changing, that humans are responsible, and that some form of action should be taken to address the risks to people and the planet." scienceblogs.com/significantf...

I agree, but where to start? It seems like we are beset on all sides by disinformation and hidden agendas with more influence. So difficult to build public consensus on this to drive change

We need to start talking about what that means for the extremes… It’s not that everywhere is going to get 2 degrees warmer. It’s an average increase than means the extremes (drought, heat, rainfall, storms etc) are going to get much worse

The South West is where we would naturally have rainforest. So it's rather like saying we won't count land use change when the Amazon gets cut down. We've cut down our rainforest a while ago, but it would equally regrow, given a chance, for carbon & biodiversity theconversation.com/livestock-gr...

Tories had the opportunity to do this and said no. They are just playing politics by asking for it now www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Part of me wonders if Mars or space is the plan for the billionaires once they have maximised their profits and the planet becomes uninhabitable

Hi Oliver. This is important. But water quality is only one part of a much bigger picture. The government needs to prioritise climate change above growth - there is no growth on a dead planet. Policies like the Heathrow expansion will not even deliver growth for years - it’s smacks of lobbying

What set up do you have for the hot water please? Asking because I’m interested and assumed ASHP weren’t suited?

Sorry to clarify I was meaning an Air Source Heat Pump nef.org.uk/can-i-get-my...

Been doing some research myself and heat pumps are good for space heating if you have a well insulated home. They aren’t good for hot water (shower/bath etc). Electric combis may be an option in future (v expensive to run at the min) if solar becomes more efficient to offset the electricity costs

You have to think that the only reason to proceed with Carbon Capture and Storage, at this point, is money/lobbying from oil and gas. It’s the only logical explanation given the dubious benefits from £22billion investment. I thought Labour were supposed to be doing better than the Tories?

Pippa, can you ask how this will be in line with their environmental targets?

I think they deffo could benefit from some encouragement!

But this is a strategy that ultimately sets them up to fail. Opinion polls are showing a majority in favour of rejoining the EU now. I think it’s unlikely that Labours current position will change reform voters mind - it’s just alienating more people?

What is the point of COP if governments can say they have agreed to a target but refuse to be legally bound by them? It’s infuriating and does nothing for this governments credibility on climate action

A healthy democracy depends on education - we need to do a better job at presenting the facts to people. All this mandate to do whatever you want for 5 years based on a general election feels outdated to me

I would also make all political donations illegal (remove corruption from the system) and give all parties the same campaign funding from a central publicly funded pot

By opening up politics and offering regular meaningful engagement in decisions about the future of our country, it could also go some way to taking power away from the billionaire owned press and the agendas they influence
comment in response to post
This is a great post. It’s more “decide, announce, defend” politics, when we should be moving more towards “engage, deliberate, decide” in democracy. We have the tools, it’s the political will that is lacking to have those conversations about the kind of country we want to be

They did kind of make a film about something similar - Don’t Look Up

Ridiculous - it’s this mind set of constant growth and supporting fossil fuel reliant industry to do it that gets us further away from where we need to be to combat climate change. Expected better from labour on this
