I've gotten multiple overseas recruitment overtures over the years. Moving abroad would be very difficult & thus until recently I always dismissed these But now? Still difficult, but if the right offer came across my desk i'd at least consider it thoughtfully instead of dismissing it out of hand

Laphroaig old fashioned. Somehow it works

Everyone who ever got funding through NIAID should be aware of this bill and start sending messages to their US legislators. The bill intends to dissolve NIAID. This is Project 2025 www.congress.gov/bill/119th-c...

I've seen several messages like this, and had a bunch of emails/DMs. I thank everyone for their concern 😂 FYI i'm fine. I had several large grants to submit this month & frankly needed a social media break. I'll probably do this again in the future for my own sanity I'm glad you all missed me :)

🚨PA colleagues: "Senator Fetterman wants to hear from you about how the federal funding freeze is affecting Pennsylvania." "If your project has been impacted, please fill out our constituent impact form:" forms.office.com/g/mFv2JAPxpC Get out your Other Support and share that info!

Crazy confirmatory results in lab this week

Brandy sazerac is pretty damn good. I may actually like it better than the rye version

Written by a MD-PhD student who had worked with rhe incoming NIH director stanforddaily.com/2025/01/29/s...

I’m beginning to sound like a broken record, but the Federal Register block is intentionally being used to stop NIH from awarding grants. They might not call it a freeze, but things are effectively frozen. We need legal action ASAP.

New paper published with the Benoit lab at the University of Cincinnati! www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

New paper published by my former PhD student Allyson Ray! link.springer.com/article/10.1...

What did I miss?

WAT

Trapped

Agree! The NIH and academic institutions are rushing to implement changes and freezes in response to executive orders that could be illegal or rescinded in days. Maybe we should push back a little, yeah?🧪

How long before papers on gender, sex, and race research start getting scrubbed from Pubmed?

What's the over/under on whether I will be able to submit my NSF grant next month?

Can confirm. Glad I got my R01 submitted early a few days ago

I really enjoy teaching. It's the grading I hate

Any university that voluntarily shutters a DEI program, office or personnel “Because of Trumps Executive Order” is making a PR decision. Not a legal one. Trumps EO does not change anti discrimination law. If anything, the EO is unlawful. Universities should treat it that way.

Just a reminder that NSF program officers aren't reaching out to you because they can't - no communications allowed.

Important new paper just out on the origins & #evolbiol of the London Underground Mosquito Culex p. molestus by @yukihaba.bsky.social @lindymcbr.bsky.social. Spoiler alert: Molestus originated 1000s of years ago in the Middle East www.biorxiv.org/content/bior... #evolviol #urbanevolution

It is simply not enough for universities to say, “Our grants & research offices are looking into how research will be affected by the latest directive.” University leaders must actively and very publicly make the case for the kind of work many of us do. The silence on this front is deafening.

I cannot stress enough how important private funding will be for underrepresented (UR) scientists for the next 4 years. NSF and NIH fund summer research opportunities for UR undergrad students in STEM, mentoring programs starting in high school, funds for UR PhD students, & more.
