Please to be on BBC radio Ulster earlier talking about @jamesnicholls.bsky.social and our team's independent review of the Northern Ireland Licensing system. Starts at 12.04. www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

Northern Ireland has a completely different system of alcohol licensing to the rest of the UK. Last week we published a review, led by @jamesnicholls.bsky.social and @niamhfitzgerald.bsky.social, looking at the system and exploring possible alternatives: www.communities-ni.gov.uk/publications...

Broke the handle off my work mug, so my wife got me a new one as a present. Expecting to be 50% more positive in meetings from now on.

Winning at Birthdays today. My daughter couldn’t decide what to decorate my cake with, so put *everything* on it. Would recommend.

Dishonest charts are coming from all directions, and they're only going to hit harder. Unless we push back. So, an interactive guide: Defense Against Dishonest Charts flowingdata.com/projects/dis...

A nice blog here from my colleauge @drduncgillespie.bsky.social on the policy of banning the sale of tobacco to future generations and the role that universities might plan in supporting this approach (and their studients): sarg-sheffield.ac.uk/blog/creatin...

Here's the geography of alcohol-specific mortality in the UK. Such a clear North West/South East gradient, with a few notable exceptions on the South Coast. Glasgow and surrounds still have the highest rates, but Sunderland, Belfast and Blackpool aren't that far behind.

Today ONS have published data on alcohol-specific deaths across the UK in 2023. We already knew most of the figures, but there are a few new bits of detail in today's release. The headline is that alcohol deaths have risen to their highest level on record. Which is obviously pretty bleak.

I don't know about you, but I had a lovely weekend cycling up hills and looking at weird birds. Bewick's Swan, Spoonbill, Redshank and Ruff and a Teal.

New today: Death rates for Americans aged 25-44 have been rising since 2010. Their mortality is now 70% higher than it would be had pre-2011 mortality declines continued. w Rafeya Raquib, Katie Berry, Keeley Morris, & @astokespop.bsky.social 1/ jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

New on the SARG website - details of a project funded by the Institute of Alcohol Studies @instalcstud.bsky.social Small Grants Scheme which will investigate barriers to the use of alcohol-free and low-alcohol drinks among individuals from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. #publichealth #sheffield

George Leckie and I have created a new short MAIHDA tutorial, with videos and practical exercises: www.ncrm.ac.uk/resources/on... It's based on our tutorial paper in SSM Pop Health, but shorter and more interactive. Hope it's helpful! @ncrm.ac.uk

Wow, this is quite the graph, showing what drugs people are injecting in Scotland. Certainly helps explain the big rise in cocaine deaths that we've seen in Scotland.

Some nice coverage of our new study from the BBC here www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

We've got another new study out. This one uses new modelling to estimate how two alternative approaches to increasing the uptake of the Drink Less app (a mass media campaign and promotion through primary care) might affect alcohol consumption, health and health inequalities in the longer term

We used the Sheffield Alcohol Policy Model to look at the long-term impact of promoting the Drink Less app through a mass media campaign or GP recommendations. We found that both options could significantly reduce alcohol-related harm and save the NHS millions of pounds #publichealth #alcoholharm

UK folks - I have *definitely* seen a very handy flowchart to help you identify what time frame a map of English local authorities comes from based on boundary changes. But I'll be damned if I can find it now. Anyone have any idea where I might find it?
