If you can't swing parents, marriage might do the trick.

Wishing you all success but see, that would be *dependently*.

The only opinion I'm worried about is my daughter's; she's Gen Alpha and she thinks I'm bloody great, joke's on y'all.

This one dedicated to my cohort peers freaking out because we're not cool any more? We were never cool, big deal.

No, what we have right now is exactly Turing's Chinese room experiment: a bullshit machine that can sound like human. It's just a bad criterion for assigning intelligence.

I'm seeing a lot of screenshots. Are those fine or a pain in the arse? Happy to send you something more copypasteable if that's less of a hassle.

"We already have choices at home" (The choices at home):

Yes making things exist in the first place is sorta thankless. For some reason this simple truth is easier to accept when it's not a personal project. (Aside: I'm using Ink and it's a 40s noir story; both things made me think of you, so it's the fact we're talking is an interesting synchronicity!)

... you know, all that bullshit: player agency, expression, characterisation.

2) I remember the talk (I also remember cringely failing to make a clear point, 🙏🏼). But yes, players/audiences are continuity machines, if they can be trusted to make comic panels into a moving narrative, they can be trusted to spin a dotted line into an arrow. What I worry about is...

1) Don't we run the risk here of letting the seams show a little too much? (Between "this is the path I the author like/prefer/think makes the most sense" and "and here are 2 other bolted-on choices because we like to pretend you have agency")?

The thing I'm doing atm is very PC-centric, so the branching rationale is very "what if at node X, instead of Rational, she reacted Sarcastically or Aggressively or...?". Not sure I'd recommend RPing/character development as the branching focus, but that's what I'm doing (foolishly).

Yup yup yup! Golden path, critical path, then "what would be a cool alternative here, here and here?". I'm using Ink atm and I feel it encourages bottlenecking fairly often, because nested choices get messy fast, so the natural tendency (imo?) is to use gathers before you reach level 3 or 4...

Only extremely handsome and clever NDs, I'm told 😁

See, that's the sensible branch-and-bottleneck approach I preach to my ND students. Naturally, I don't follow my own advice and I feel like I'm cheapening the experience if I don't Track Everything...

On one level, it makes a lit of sense. On another... I fret by doing things that way I'm skewing the narrative one way, and then the "other" branches won't make as much sense/won't be as appealing as the Narrative Mainroad... 🤨
