I was excited to learn from Springer that the IF of our open access journal BioData Mining has increased to 6. I helped found this journal in 2008 as an Editor-in-Chief & will step down later this year. biodatamining.biomedcentral.com #bioinformatics #datascience #mlsky #artificialintelligence

Found this remarkable paper on a twitter thread from @rohanpaul.bsky.social arxiv.org/abs/2506.08872

The Heuristic Evolutionary Rule Optimization System (HEROS) is a supervised rule-based ML algorithm designed to agnostically model diverse 'structured' data problems & yield compact human interpretable solutions. It is scikit-learn compatible github.com/UrbsLab/heros #machinelearning #mlsky

#BethesdaDeclaration @standupforscience.bsky.social I decided to share the opportunity to sign the support letter for the Bethesda Declaration with my entire email list for our family holiday letter. I learned some important lessons. 1/n

I'm thinking of this unforgettable email today, especially that last line.

RIP Atul Butte @atulbutte.bsky.social My sincere condolences to his family, friends, current and former lab members, and colleagues.

The vile assassinations in Minnesota show how easy it is to pretend to be a law enforcement officer to gain trust and access. Now imagine if you were masked, carrying assault weapons, showing no ID, and wearing an ICE uniform that can be duplicated.

They launched a coup, suffered no consequences for it, won back power, and have used the power to pardon everyone involved while remaking the country through violence and intimidation. It’s just ridiculous to talk about the political violence of yelling at ICE agents within that context.

And you need coffee and carbs before you protest! Bread & Cie’s 30 year anniversary. We have been coming here for 26 years. Love it!

With the tragic assassination of a Minnesota Democratic leader, I’m going to underline this point again.

I heard this morning that my informatics colleague Dr. Atul Butte passed after a battle with cancer. He was a giant in the field & inspired many of us over his distinguished career. He was a passionate champion of the power of big data & his impact on our field is immeasurable. RIP Atul & thanks.

Spending a few days with intramural researcher at NIH has me thinking about the old Bell Labs, the storied research institute where major breakthroughs in physics, chemistry and mat sci (and associated @nobelprize.bsky.social awards) were made in the 70s-80s 1/n

Yuri Gagarin in a silly hat.

Brief 🧵 Hi, everyone. I know so many people have been affected by the funding cuts to science in horrific ways. Sanaria, the company I am consulting for, has produced unprecedented progress in a highly effective malaria vaccine and is in major financial jeopardy because of these cuts.

Dear Universe, please shut off all autocorrect everywhere. It is the most spectacular failure in the history of technology. If I tell my family we're going to Placerita Canyon, no, I did not intend to say "Placenta Canyon" Thanks

Did you know we launched a new Health Sciences University and PhD Program in Health AI at Cedars-Sinai? #meded #education

My message to Trump’s NIH Director? No one in America wants us to do LESS cancer research. No one is asking Trump to make it harder to cure Alzheimer's disease. Yet Trump is cutting all of this NOW and demanding an $18 BILLION cut to NIH next year. Not on my watch.

Helen Chu was among the scientists who first detected COVID-19 in the US. She knows more about vaccine policy than all of RFK Jr cronies combined. When you drive away expertise, you are left with nothing, or worse - like the discredited quacks & dilettantes he has chosen so far.

Seems a good time to invite Sen Britt to watch an NIH review panel (aka study section) analyze piles of grants over several days to identify the <10% that win funding. Applications that scientists spent months preparing, whose peers spent weeks poring through in advance of review mtg at NIH.

This is what it looks like without a United States Congress.

Today, @nihfellowsunited.bsky.social staff sent a powerful letter to the NIH Director outlining serious concerns about the agency’s direction. Thousands have already signed in support—add your name. – Mary Munson, ASCB President www.standupforscience.net/bethesda-dec...

The good thing about science is that it’s true no matter what you believe. The bad thing about deadly diseases is they will affect you and your loved ones no matter your level of trust in science. Restoring public trust does not mean killing medicines even for those who still believe in science.

The courts and congress must act

Hello. I live in Los Angeles. The president is lying.

The federal government is moving to take over the California National Guard and deploy 2,000 soldiers. That move is purposefully inflammatory and will only escalate tensions.

Canceled health research: “The N.I.H. “regularly examines its research portfolio” to determine which projects are “the most meritorious,” Andrew Nixon, a spokesman for [HHS], said…” What nonsense. gift article from The New York Times. You can read it for free. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

Grant reviewers: if you really think that the grant needs an additional experiment/additional analysis then please also suggest what is unnecessary in the proposal. Assuming the budget reasonably estimated it's not possible to do more for nothing.

#SoapboxDaily: Top universities have a social responsibility to educate as many of our citizens as possible. Prioritize funding to institutions with high standards and larger class sizes. 🇺🇸

CO₂ at Mauna Loa just reached a monthly average of >430 ppm for the first time. That's possibly higher than in over 3.3 million years. The global RATE of increase is off the chart. It's hard to exaggerate how unprecedented this is!

Excellent piece by @julieparsonnet.bsky.social on infectious diseases as root causes of a number of chronic human diseases; pausing research on bacterial and viral infections will limit efforts to cure neurodegeneration, autoimmune, metabolic disease as well as cancer substack.com/inbox/post/1...
