Happy birthday citymeetings.nyc!

Also notably: 1. citymeetings turns 1 year old this week! 2. My mug appeared in Who's Who in Emerging Tech in City & State yesterday. (Yes, the photo was taken in front of the wall of the McGolrick park bathroom.)

Not the main event today, but part of this Zoning & Franchises hearing deals with a contentious sidewalk cafe application for Le Dive in Dimes Square in Chris Marte's district, veering into discussion on open streets, etc. citymeetings.nyc/city-council...

I think Today in Gay wins the award for first citymeetings.nyc mention in a podcast, mentioning the committee vote to designate January 31 as Cecilia Gentili Day. I love to see it. One of the underrated things about actually-transparent meetings is that they amplify real, on-the-ground advocacy.

I know the FAD is the last thing on anyone’s mind these days but this piece linked to a DEP hearing on citymeetings the other day and I thought it was a really fun read about regional water politics in NYC and upstate. kingstoncreative.net/the-catskill...

Writing the newsletter for Monday and, at the rate that everyone cites the figure, 1.4% will be seared into my eyeballs by the end of this year.

A fun little aside from Jumaane Williams at the DOE hearing today.

This afternoon Crystal Hudson asked NYC Aging and NYCHA about the impact of the federal funding pause on NYC's older adult programs. A bit of insight into what folks in NYC govt. are hearing and doing w.r.t. NYC's programs. citymeetings.nyc/city-council...

citymeetings #26 went out this morning! With a link to my @thoughtbot.com interview, a nod to budget season (+ a paid offering), and highlights on: - DOT's capital planning - Worker protection bills - DSNY's snow preparedness - The Veterans Advisory Board buttondown.com/citymeetings... Enjoy!

Just for fun, here are two recent updates to NYC Council's A/V work: - Last year one of the chambers introduced a new camera angle (screenshot shown). - All the video this year has more saturated color. I like it. Apparently they replaced all the cameras.

I talked about how citymeetings works and how I plan to sustain it on Giant Robots Smashing Into Giant Robots (the Thoughtbot podcast). You can give it a listen wherever you find your podcasts or here: podcast.thoughtbot.com/558

The Mayor’s Community Affairs Unit really milking this event that happened on the 18th for this week’s newsletter.

*Current* mayoral candidate Paperboy Love Prince gave testimony at a Committee on Finance vote a few weeks ago. Face painted, he began his testimony with a big cackle. (And also had a lot to say.) His testimony is on citymeetings: citymeetings.nyc/city-council...

Hey @davepeck.org thank you for the nice little shoutout here! davepeck.org/2025/01/15/s...

I reviewed each step of @justinbrannan.bsky.social's finance committee meeting breakdown this morning as I always do. I intervened zero times during the chapter extraction process: a first. (Anyway, meeting's up.) citymeetings.nyc/city-council...

citymeetings.nyc is amazing and makes public meetings so much more accessible to citizens! I can browse the topics that came up at #NYC council and watch clips of relevant discussions or testimony in a few minutes. I'd never have the time or patience to watch hours just to see if something came up.

A short NYC Council Stated Meeting to open the year. Only one comment on congestion pricing, which I thought was surprising. It was by Chris Banks. citymeetings.nyc/city-council...

There is a moment at Randy Mastro's corp. counsel hearing where he asserts that NJ's case against congestion pricing is a pro-environment case, @keithpowersnyc.bsky.social says he'd contest otherwise, then Randy Mastro goes "can't speak to the governor's intentions!", and it's emblematic.

Tech heroes are few and far between lately, but I think Vikram Oberoi qualifies. hellgatenyc.com/vikram-obero...

Writing Monday's citymeetings newsletter and there's a bullet point from Greenwood Cemetery which reminds me: I ate what looked like a very ripe persimmon off one of their trees several weeks ago but I, uh, miscalculated. And, well,

Software engineer @vikramoberoi.com's citymeetings.nyc is making keeping tabs on City Council meetings a little less painful. hellgatenyc.com/vikram-obero...
