New: Jeff Bezos emailed staff at the Washington Post this morning announcing that the Post opinion pages going forward were largely going to focus on defending personal liberties and free markets. Current opinion section editor David Shipley is out.

If you have maga Senator(s), all US DEMOCRAT Senators and US DEMOCRAT Reps INSIST that maga SENATORS MUST hear from us! Engagement is critical! US Capitol Switchboard: 202-224-3121 Tell them your story. Make them repeat back to you what you told them...ensure you are heard! PLEASE REPOST!!

I note in the article how this could be a troubling expansion of Trump’s anti-diversity order. If you are a federal employee — incl. one put on leave or fired — who knows of similar action happening elsewhere across the government, please reach out from a non-work phone. My Signal is in my bio.

This is also what we are hearing inside NIH. The top leadership of each institute, and the NIH Director's office have all been fighting to retain probationary employees — and re-hire those terminated due to the renewal ban. It's the HHS/DOGE/Musk people who are saying no. 🧪

An RSVP link for the STAND UP FOR SCIENCE PITTSBURGH RALLY is now available! Please RSVP and Repost!! www.eventbrite.com/e/stand-up-f... Pittsburgh let’s go! 💪🏼♥️ @standupforscience.bsky.social #StandUpforScience2025 #StandUpforScience

If you are worried about science there IS something that you can do! Join us next Friday in DC to make your voice heard. Come and stand up for science! Show that science is for everyone. I’ll be there and I can’t wait to see you there too! @standupforscience.bsky.social

"The cuts hit hard in NIH’s [research campuses, primarily in Maryland right outside DC], which make up about 11% of the agency’s $47.4 billion. With 1200 principal investigators, the intramural program is the world’s largest biomedical research institution..." www.science.org/cont...

The effects of the House’s proposed “Medicaid cuts to pay for tax cuts” in one graph: a 3.9% boost in income for the top 1% of households and a 7.4% reduction in income for the bottom fifth of households. In two words: class warfare. www.epi.org/blog/the-hou...

Three different federal judges delivered legal setbacks and slap downs to Trump in the span of an hour and a half today in a series of cases challenging controversial moves taken during the early days of his second term. The rulings are the latest to pump the brakes on Trump’s agenda.

House Republicans just voted to gut Medicaid, which covers 1 in 5 Americans overall, including 41% of births and 63% of nursing home care. They also just voted to gut SNAP, on which 41 million food insecure Americans rely. This won’t just harm people. This will kill people. They own this.

Science in the 'Burgh I am planning to be there and looking forward to seeing you there too (if you are local and available)

BREAKING: DOJ is appealing Judge Ali's order — that feds pay contracts required under the TRO by 11:59p Wednesday, list names to the court who can respond to questions about TRO compliance, and turn over any post-TRO guidance to the court — to the D.C. Circuit.

BREAKING: Federal judge issues a preliminary injunction preventing the Trump administration from implementing the "unilateral, non-individualized" funding "pause" ordered by the Office of Management and Budget, under that order or "under a different name." storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

Another loss for #science & the next generation of researchers. The 28-year running NIDA summer internship program is cancelled for this year. @altnih4science.bsky.social #SavetheNIH

I would urge folks not to assume the career staff at NIH support any of this. They care deeply about keeping the extramural research program going. There's a reason we've seen so many departures of high-level career leaders. Most remaining are doing what they can to save the program.

This looks hugely problematic. Thank you @beyer.house.gov for digging into it.

Please share: @delauro.house.gov is cochair of the US House Congressional Rapid Response Task Force and Litigation Working Group. They are looking for instances where the impoundment and restriction of NIH/NSF funds is having a negative impact. Submit examples here delauro.house.gov/constituent-...

The Trump administration has blocked a crucial step in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) process for funding medical research, likely in violation of a federal judge’s temporary restraining order on federal funding freezes. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

👩‍⚕️CDC and Disability Rights 🦼 Before we talk more about disability, we need to address the history of eugenics, ableism and racism that haunts US public health work.

“Federal agencies, once proponents for increasing opportunities for scientists with disabilities, are now ceasing programs geared toward that goal. Left uncertain is how funding for disability research … will be affected by the order.”

The understaffed Social Security Administration faces further cuts and office closures at the same time as retiring Baby Boomers have caused a surge in the number of people receiving benefits. https://propub.li/4ia5PX5

PITTSBURGH SCIENTISTS, TEACHERS, DOCTORS: Has your work been negatively impacted by the Trump administration? We are planning a Stand Up For Science rally on March 7 and we would love to have some local folks who have been impacted participate and (if you'd like) speak. DM or signal: cmcdphd.88

1. Been working harder than I ever have in my life to protect institutions and people I cherish. 2. Shoke my head frequently as the level of cowardice revealing itself from organizations and individuals who somehow believe that keeping their heads down will somehow protect them. 3. Rinse and repeat

Trump’s executive orders have blocked entrance to the country for more than 110,000 refugees, including thousands of Afghans who worked with the U.S. military. “We feel betrayed,” said one Afghan American soldier. With @texastribune.org

I've now seen Elon's weekend harassment email to federal workers. Here's what it says. talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/elon-...

Another school curtails admissions, even offers already made. This is on #Trump, #Musk and #Vought. Time to fight back. www.thedp.com/article/2025...

Several good things are happening according r/fednews so I am going to drop them here. If federal workers are fighting back, how much more us? A thread/

I am sad to share that all Retirement & Disability Research centers have been ordered to stop work. My fellowship will no longer exist, and the work of so many talented researchers and dedicated staff will be cut short. www.ssa.gov/news/press/r...

An important thread by my fellow (former) NBER RDRC Graduate Fellow. I’d like to echo the fact that my own work on reducing barriers to employment for people with disabilities finds cost savings far greater than what is claimed to be saved by cutting RDRCs.

New, from me @theatlantic.com: *No, the federal government is not too big *It has real human capital needs *Firings are indiscriminate, weakening state capacity *Creating a toxic and politicized workplace is driving away dedicated employees www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

Ugh, well this sucks. One of many highlights of having moved from a liberal arts college to an R1 has been getting to work with doctoral students engaged in interesting health policy research questions. I am immensely saddened and infuriated that this Administration is demolishing higher ed.

SSA RDRC is the funding source for our (@ksavin.bsky.social & my) important study focused on the work-related decisions & barriers that SSI recipients face. Absolutely senseless.

The @uwrdrc.bsky.social - through SSA partnership - is critical in supporting my research agenda studying how policies can extend labor force participation among older adults. These RDRC programs are effective as an approach to fund a broad research agenda to inform SSA on critical issues.

I had plenty of trust in the SSA before all this BS. Repost with alt-text.

The nature of “shock and awe” is that it makes it hard to see or think clearly. What’s playing out through a veneer of chaos is a deliberate tactical program to create a system in which the President has sole authority over the entire executive branch: www.newyorker.com/news/the-led...

Federal career workers: We appreciate you and your work. You don't deserve this mistreatment. Here's a file with lots of resources if you are facing illegal termination. docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

The University of Pittsburgh confirmed Friday that there would be no new Ph.D. offers of admission while Pitt works to understand how reduced federal aid could impact the institution.

From a source at NIH, some grants may be nixed because the investigator’s bio sketch mentions DEI-related activities, even if the science itself has nothing to do with it.
