Wow. Just was seconds away from being phished. SCAM WARNING 🧵 -Got a call from an area code where Paypal has corporate headquarters -Recorded voice says that it's Paypal fraud protection and that they were getting a request to change my number on the account and to press 1 if it wasn't me 1/

American police departments are spending hundreds of thousands on Massive Blue’s unproven and secretive technology that uses AI-generated online personas designed to interact with and collect intelligence on “college protesters,” “radicalized” political activists, and suspected traffickers.

I don't think I've ever seen someone speak about children (in this case, specifically Autistic kids) with such disgust and such disdain.

I feel like the saying "aged like milk" is too generous in this case. Milk goes bad after a couple weeks. This is more "aged like a raspberry," which you buy on a Sunday and is somehow is already moldy Monday morning.

I spoke with Business Insider about some of the privacy implications with the pending 23andme sale. The article provides a good overview of the company and data-related concerns. You can read the article here: www.businessinsider.com/23andme-what... [if you hit a paywall: archive.ph/ZA9EW ]

This is both alarming in its desired impact—to supercharge the efforts already underway to punish free speech and dissent—and also because, as @cendemtech.bsky.social research has shown, automated social media analytics tools are notoriously error-prone.

Tomorrow I'm covering COVID in my surveillance class and, I'm not gonna lie, going through the timeline is a bit traumatizing. This is in part because all this was happening at the same time as my cancer surgery and treatment but also as a reminder of just how bad things were throughout 2020.

Today is launch day! 🚀 I’m proud to announce that my book, the premium membership, and my first course, Master the Revise & Resubmit, are now live on my website. In this 🧵, I'll walk you through my latest writing services for professors and grad students. www.indeliblevoice.com

NEW — After putting all Institute of Museum & Library Services (IMLS) employees on administrative leave Monday, I'm told DOGE is canceling congressionally-appropriated grants to state libraries across the entire country. Libraries are getting notice that funding was canceled as of 4/1. More here:

I'd like to thank WIRED/@couts.bsky.social for making a 3-minute video that is basically a summary of the research I do & why I do it. --"nothing to hide" is a logical fallacy --we don't know how our data could be used in the future --we may not need privacy but we can help protect it for others

This is inaccurate. There is no known vulnerability with Signal's core tech. The memo was discussing phishing attempts, which Signal has worked to mitigate. And it was hastily reported. It's important not to spread misinfo that can confuse people into moving away from meaningfully private comms.

As I tell students in every privacy/security class I teach, even with great technology--and Signal is the best encrypted messaging app out there-- humans will always be the weakest link in maintaining data security/integrity.

In 2016-2017, I interviewed a handful of 23&Me customers for my Ph.D dissertation research on privacy, personal disclosure and power. I asked my interviewees about their concerns should something 'bad' happen to the company, like, oh, going bankrupt, and the impact on their genetic data.

Crossing into the United States has become increasingly dangerous for digital privacy. Here are a few steps you can take to minimize the risk of Customs and Border Patrol accessing your data.

They're called public records for a reason. Starting today, WIRED will *stop paywalling* articles that are primarily based on public records obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, becoming the first publication to partner with @freedom.press to offer this for our new coverage.

We’re getting a clearer view of the privacy concessions people will have to make to avoid bricking the functionality of already-purchased devices.

Some levity: I got very excited walking to teach this morning when I saw a student with a bedazzled pizza slice purse. I was also tired and dragging my feet a bit, and fell flat on my face outside the building I teach in. Fun times. But adorable purse!

This weekend, I published an article about how the right wing bullshit machine works (in large part due to participatory dynamics that integrate the collaborative work of online audience). My fellow Americans I have bad news: boycotts need to be targeted to work. And the target needs to know your demands so that they can be met once sufficient pain is delivered. No one will notice a diffuse boycott of The Economy. There remains no substitute for joining a group and making plans.

I was born in 1980 and just had my annual checkup in January. Anticipating RFK Jr, I had them do a measles titer test while they did other blood work, and sure enough, I was not immune and thus just got a booster MMR.

I’m talking about one of my favorite surveillance articles today in class—“The Surveillant Consumer” by @lukestark.bsky.social and @karenlevy.bsky.social. I love this framing, particularly as it relates to parents feeling a duty to constantly monitor their kids. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...
