In the voters' eyes, immigration is the only area where Trump is doing well. Immigration is also where he chose to openly defy the courts. Go figure, as they say in the US.

Read an insightful paper on Immigration Policy and Electoral Mandates by MIDEM: 'Immigration Policy and Electoral Mandates' Populist actors repeatedly accuse established parties of breaking their election promises on migration policy – and thus deceiving the electorate.

The 'copy vs. the original' thesis on campaigning on immigration is incorrect. The German parliamentary election of 23 February reopened the question of how the political mainstream should deal with far-right agitation on immigration and identity.

The US administration apparently feeling a strong need to export its culture wars abroad. Still better than militarily attacking other countries, I guess.

SCOOP --> Trump's State Department quietly terminated a contract that was in the process of transferring evidence of Russian abductions of Ukrainian kids to European law enforcement, two sources familiar with the situation tell me. Details here: newrepublic.com/article/1927...

Some gentle reminders: - Removing people with no right to stay is a treaty objective for the EU. - Failing to do so undermines the credibility of our migration policy. - If the mainstream parties picked up on the problem, the far right would lose a campaigning issue.

A gentle reminder to @politico.eu: Lisbon Treaty, Art. 79: The Union "shall adopt measures in… illegal immigration and unauthorised residence, including removal and repatriation of persons residing without authorisation." This is a treaty objective. The EU has been failing miserably on it.

In fact, most Central and East European governments were not right about Russia. Some CEE academics and observes were, but that’s it. Look at CEE energy policy and defence expenditures prior to 2022. Those don’t really look like credible warnings for the rest of Europe.
