Agree with the part about power of the people -

Smart, funny, and surreal poets Joanna Fuhrman and Caroline Hagood warmed up the room with a projected scene from Back to the Future, read incredible poems, & talked about how writing allows us to build a time machine and bring back the dead (but not really! We understand)!

Really enjoying this novel so far! Kantika, by Elizabeth Graver, is about a Jewish family in Turkey in the early 1900s. The author is giving a talk at my synagogue in a few weeks. My dad’s side has the same background, so it’s interesting to me, but the story and writing are good too.

The final countdown begins! It's been a delight seeing so many applications come in for Jewish Poetry Conference. If you've been waiting to submit yours, don't wait too much longer: the application window closes at midnight ET this Friday, February 21! Find details at our website: bit.ly/3IkSoDW

As both an editor and a writer, I really enjoyed reading this!

"My poetry is basically a poetry of praise. It's an affirmation of the world, of the beauty of the world, and, at the same time, it's a protest against cruelty. I cannot accept the cruelty of the world … “ — Czeslaw Milosz

In honor of Tu B’shvat (Jewish holiday of the trees), here’s a poem by me, “The Tree Line” (published in A Gathering of the Tribes)

I wrote a poem about ushering in my forties with an MRI. Thank you to the marvelous @psalteryandlyre.bsky.social for giving this one a home!

Such a great poem

Tu b’shevat (Jewish celebration of trees) starts tonight so here’s an amazing tree poem from Aviya Kushner

There is so much right now. You can't do everything. But you don't have to. There are a lot of us and we are going to share the load. We make progress *together*. Ask yourself honestly: what can I do to help TODAY? Then do it. Tomorrow, try to do a little more. You got this. ❤️👊

Pay attention to what they tell you to forget pay attention to what they tell you to forget pay attention to what they tell you to forget ~Muriel Rukeyser, “Double Ode” (1976)

My own writing is a bit of a slog right now. But there is something delicious and potent about consuming the art that this country so desperately wants to withhold from us. I will read and listen to and lay eyes on every bit of rebellious art you create. I will DEVOUR IT. Tag me. Link me. Gimme.

Inclusion was a word attempting to sum up a philosophy, a culture, an intention. Any number of words could easily take its place! I’m thinking of using involvement.

Equity was always a $2 word where a 10-cent word would do, ad people often confused it with equality. Try out fairness, rights, or justice.

Diversity was always a euphemism. Come up with a different word and carry on.

I sincerely don’t know why people aren’t physically stopping those dorks. Move shit. Lock doors. Lose the keys. Everyone switch seats. Turn off all the lights. Switch the signs on the elevator lobby. Make the settings all silly. Use a different language. Wear costumes. Fill rooms with balloons

RFK Jr. is a danger to public health. Every Republican senator who votes yes will own the consequences. When RFK Jr. follows anti-vax conspiracies instead of science, when he greenlights Trump's anti-abortion agenda, when he cuts healthcare for seniors — remember who voted yes.

Called any elected officials today?

the white house saying the medicaid portal will be "back online shortly" does lend some credence to the idea that they're just shutting the entire government down and manually whitelisting whatever they see becoming an immediate political threat

Conservative budget wonks (Manhattan Instiutte, Tax Foundation) confirming that this is a consittutional crisis. Not liberal hysteria. Happening right now.

A veteran I know said that cutting US Aid will just bite us later. We live in a global world. If we contribute to poverty, hunger, etc. people will export their anger and resentment, and diseases that spread in vulnerable populations that will make their way to us. So even re: self-interest.

If you are in DC, the folks who are at USAID putting themselves on the line need help right now. Please join them if possible. USAID at 555 12th street NW And if you are press, please go cover this!

Stop letting unfunny men tell you there’s something wrong with you for not getting their “jokes”. Stop fake laughing. Let their reality reflect the truth of how fundamentally they misunderstand humor. Neuter their ability to use “it was a joke” for emotional cover. Make them see nobody laugh.

When there is a contest judge I love, I entertain the thought very split-second that I could maybe pull together my shaggy unholy mess of a book length project into a submittable polished document lol

Imagine being a billionaire and not finding joy every day with just giving your money away. Like, every day you could walk up to a small nonprofit, hand them $100k, and walk away knowing you'd just hugely changed people's lives. How broken would you have to be for that NOT to be what you chose?
