Miya Atsumu, their unofficial asset, just gave him more information than the people he signed his life off to were willing to share. Meian Shugo fell for Miya Atsumu, and Sakusa can't blame him.

A hint of a smirk is all he catches before Sakusa is staring at a broad back once more. He clutches the files he's holding a bit tighter. Miya Atsumu, The Whisperer, might as well have handed him a solution in the stead of a simple document.

He continues to walk back where he came from, until Sakusa loses an internal fight and calls out to him. “Miya,” he waits until the other's steps pause to continue. Atsumu tilts his head to show he’s listening, and Sakusa knows he can't fuck this up. “Thank you.”

"Shugo never did that,” he locks gazes with Sakusa as he says it. “We were a team.” Sakusa doesn't know how to respond to that. In the end, he doesn't have to. Atsumu turns back towards the building. “Have yourself a good day, Omi-omi.”

“Even if you can't admit to it on paper.” After a beat, Sakusa dares to speak. “I'm not Meian, Miya. I'm not here to have you do my job for me.” The words taste bitter as they leave his mouth, but only the way Atsumu visibly shuts down makes him regret them.

Those eyes shine a bit brighter when pride lights up in them. A part of Sakusa whispers he's glad to witness their glint in broad daylight. More than ever before, he shuts that part down. “Your people need me and my whispers, Agent Sakusa,” Atsumu’s posture dares him to disagree.

“Your connections to us put you in danger, and he doesn't want you getting close to any of us anymore.” “Yeah,” Atsumu lets out a breath. “If it were up to him, I'd be locked in the backrooms any time y’all come over. But you don't really come for the files, do you?”

Sakusa tries to gather his bearings after what he's learned. This conversation did not go remotely how he thought it would. Then something clicks. “Osamu,” he says. “You said your brother is overbearing because of what happened,” the dots connect in his head.

But even he couldn't get away with breaching procedures like that. With putting a civilian at risk time and time again. “I got myself into something I shouldn't have, and someone I cared about lost his job – his whole life, in the process.”
comment in response to post
Atsumu’s lips tilt upwards. “No, not one bit. They let him help with locating me, treating it as a civilian recovery, but he had a lot of explaining to do after.” That explains more than Sakusa was ready to face. Meian was good at his job. Great, even.

"I know,” Atsumu smiles, but it doesn't reach his eyes. “Shugo knew that too, and that's when things got messy. He opened up to your suited-up higher-ups about how I was an asset.” Sakusa hums. “Let me guess, they didn't like that.”

Atsumu continues to rub his wrists. “They kept me for three days, trying to negotiate with the agency.” “We don't negotiate,” the words were out before Sakusa could stop them.

"Anyone tailing either of us would know, and it eventually caught up to us,” Sakusa shuts down a different feeling climbing up his throat. “About nine months ago, when I approached a source, they knew about Shugo and I, and what I used to do for him.”

Sakusa didn't like where this was going. “And when I say we grew close,” Atsumu anxiously flicks his eyes from Sakusa’s own to the ground beneath their feet. “Well, it wasn't really a secret.” Atsumu starts to unconsciously rub his wrists, letting something deeper than reminisce show.

That, Sakusa could believe. “After a few years, it was as easy as breathing,” Atsumu almost smiles at the words. “He came to me with a case, I did some official digging, along with some not-so-official meddling. I think most of his team knew, but our success rate was too good for anyone to care.”

He doesn't comment on the return of the nickname either, even when it lightens something within him. “I, uh, may have helped him a bit more than I probably should've a few times,” Atsumu continues. “Meian didn't like it at first, wanting to play by the books and all, but I can be quite convincing.”
comment in response to post
Sakusa says nothing to the insult. He has a bad feeling about all of this. Atsumu blinks a few times, staring past Sakusa’s head. “Shugo came to see me often enough, much like you do. We grew close,” his eyes soften a bit. “Kinda hard not to, ain't it Omi?”
comment in response to post
“Listen, Agent Sakusa,” the blond is the most serious he's ever seen him. “I’m not one for sharing information for free. But if you suited-up people are willing to stop a good man from doing a job he loved, just to do absolute jackshit about it, then I don't see why I'd keep my mouth shut about it.”
comment in response to post
"Oh,” Atsumu seems genuinely taken back by his admission. “Um, they never gave you guys like, a brief of anything of why he left? I thought the whole point was to make an example out of the whole thing.” An example?

He reigns in his reaction, and responds in the most straightforward tone he can master. “I know you used to be in contact with Agent Meian on behalf of the National Archives prior to my time, but that is the extent of it.”

Shugo. Atsumu had just called Special Agent Meian, who had more than twenty years of service on his back before he was forced to resign, by his given name. What the fuck. Atsumu takes in his surprised expression. “You didn't know?”
