UK universities contribute over £265 billion to the UK economy annually There were 240,420 academic staff & 398,170 total staff (FT & PT) employed at UK universities in 22/23 Screaming into a void though, if only we weren't all lazy woke feminist Marxists trying to destroy the brains of the young

I do love wry sceptics on #ValentinesDay. Below the famous graffito on this fresco in the House of the Lovers in #Pompeii —‘Lovers, like bees, enjoy a honeyed life’— two responses were added ‘Lovers, lovers, why do you need them?’ and ‘I wish’.

Who else wants this as a chess set? 👀

As a fellow local I concur… especially this morning with the new maple pecan muffins which tasted just like the pecan waffles I always make for my parents whenever I visit. Absolute food nostalgia in muffin form. Massive #tinyjoys

Ooh… good reason for another Turkish holiday. Perge is already such a gorgeous site to visit.

We're celebrating, as ever, the start of Super Bowl 2025 with this Superb Owl. 🦉

Getting up before 4:30 am is totally better than a 24 hour flight, right? 🥱 #ASCS2025

Possibly fleeing a Vesuvius eruption 2,000 years before the AD79 eruption! News - Bronze Age Trackway Discovered in Italy - Archaeology Magazine

I’ve spent many enjoyable hours with Hamilton’s accounts of Vesuvius, stunning both for the discussion of volcanic activity and very blatant racism/colonialism for south Italians. If you work on this region it strikes me as a must read. It inadvertently explains much about the history of discovery.

Clear-sighted reading of exactly what these cuts mean in practice for Arts and Humanities at Cardiff. A grim picture.

Happy Year of the Snake! 🐍 Antiquity's fascination with snakes arises from myths and religious practices. In Egypt, they symbolized power and protection. In Greece, they were sacred to Asclepius and wrapped around his staff. Romans saw them as symbols of renewal and immortality.

I love this relief b/c you can’t read this inscription and maintain the traditional oh yes all women working in Roman inns were sex-workers. (And yes I reference it in a forthcoming article exactly on this topic.)

Meep.

Bar night for Cupid.

This. Isn’t it time to rethink how academia shuts so many great scholars out of grants and other research positions simply because the whole system is broken?

I'm pretty sure posts like this one are why the internet was even invented.

How could our #FindsFriday be anything other than these beautiful earrings recently unearthed in Pompeii?✨🦪🏺 Photo credits: Tony Jolliffe/BBC

Bath time! Such a stunning example of private luxury in #Pompeii. I think we're going to need a lot of bubbles. #AncientRome www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Someone appears - finally - to have read Pedar Foss’s brilliant book “Pliny and the Eruption of Vesuvius” (2022). www.theguardian.com/world/2024/d...
