Once upon a time, some villagers came across a large, ornate wooden box in the local woods. On the side of the box was a message: “Whatever money you put in this box will, in future, grow to become 2.5 times larger.” 1/

This. I want this.

Do this. Say this. 👇🏻

"He uses efficiency as a smokescreen for incompetence." youtu.be/_cZ7hN4f43Y?...

“In some ways that’s even more chilling than firing the four stars,” Rosa Brooks, a professor at Georgetown Law. “It’s what you do when you’re planning to break the law: you get rid of any lawyers who might try to slow you down.” By NYT Greg Jaffe www.nytimes.com/2025/02/22/u...

I know these people haven’t connected A , B, C yet, but if at point A, the department of education is defunded, then at point B thousands of schools are forced to close due to lack of money, then at point C, what happens to their kids while they go to work as it takes 2 pay checks to make ends meet?

Gutting work from @pamherd.bsky.social on the brutality of Trump's anti-accessibility policies and the harm it does to our best students. Cutting accessibility is actually how you destroy merit, not promote it. Who is included in Trump's America? open.substack.com/pub/donmoyni...

Does it occur to anyone that AI is being/will be trained on systems & sites that are being scrubbed of DEI and good science? The "training" that happens in our generation will be baked in like the Y2K bug, but so much more insidious and less transparent.

Amen.

Diversity is our greatest asset, even if the government disagrees… They not like us! POC in STEM are here to stay. They tried to rig the game but you can’t fake influence! Mustard on the [Be][At] bro. Happy Black History Month!

Bravo @plos.org! US exec orders "stand in direct conflict with our core values, our mission, edit policies" "PLOS will not compromise on issues of scientific rigor & editorial integrity... we seek diversity because more expert voices make for better science" theplosblog.plos.org/2025/02/plos...

Saying no to Dolly's free books for toddlers program puts you squarely on the wrong side of history.

I cannot think of anything more profoundly un-American than a president declaring himself a “king”

What a waste. For these scientists, for the CDC, for all of us.

Important 🧵: Stanford political scientist uses data to show DOGE is attacking “liberal” agencies, not focusing on waste & inefficiency: “The hardest hit agencies are those that regulate industry, protect public health, and expand access to education.”

two different Zürich coffee shop baristas have given me free coffee as a consolation for being American, so i've got that going for me i guess

Exactly right

Interesting data in light of current events. More about welfare queen Elon Musk: www.profgalloway.com/elon-musk-we...

DOGE recommended firing workers at: -FDA, which oversees Neuralink -FAA, which oversees SpaceX -USAID, which probed Starlink -CFPB, which oversees Tesla's financing arm and a potential payment platform on X. "Conflict of interest" is a severe understatement.

📢 “He’s trying to steal Medicaid to enrich himself. He’s gutting NASA to line his pockets with SpaceX. He’s looting everything good in America for private profit.” - @aoc.bsky.social at today’s #SaveOurServices NYC rally. The fight isn’t over. Join us: go.savepublicservices.com

I understand why these stories exist but it’s important to be clear that he’s not “saving” 16 billion, he’s choosing, personally, without oversight, to wipe out 16 billion dollars of government services to veterans and the disabled and food safety etc etc

Lol this sign "Do not bring food into the library Food residue will attract mice Mice will acquire knowledge in the library Get into university Then replace you" 😂

Waking up and reading the news may not be the best way to start your day. Ignore it for a few hours and be productive.

I feel like I'm going insane every time I see a media story about DOGE that doesn't also mention the fact that the Government Accountability Office exists and performs the exact function that DOGE pretends to, only in a credibly constitutional, non-partisan, and conflict-of-interest-free manner

"The abrupt termination of critical USAID-funded clinical trials, with insufficient time to safeguard the welfare of people who are participating, is profoundly unethical and utterly inexcusable" www.statnews.com/2025/02/16/u... via @statnews.com

History buffs will know that every authoritarian leader eventually converges on some version of: "I *am* the state. I can not break the law, I am the law, the law is instantiated in me." Our march to authoritarianism so far has been excruciatingly by-the-book. Hitting every beat. No surprises.

State health departments should absolutely be all over hiring these folks. The hole left by a gov't-manipulated CDC/NIH (even as good folk remain) must be filled by states.

Federal public health workers across HHS were terminated. We focus a lot on the CDC, but premier public health workers are at all HHS agencies, and HHS cut over 5200 workers today. Probation is 1 year for regular staff, 2 years for management level, and 1 year for newly promoted supervisors

We have heard that the entire flu resources section of website is going down tonight. You can check your local health dept for information about flu. We will update as we learn more.

💘

ATTN FEDERAL WORKERS: I’ll say this again: download all your SF-50s, performance evals, and your eOPF. Now. Print hard copies. And make sure you file an informal grievance with your supervisor within 15 days of any adverse action. Here is a template: www.muellershewrote.com/p/informal-g...

It is really short-sighted and stupid to be gutting public health and outbreak surveillance capacity right now: - H5N1 nationwide - uncontrolled - TB in Kansas - largest U.S outbreak - Measles in Texas - Expanding - Seasonal flu - Worst in 15 years - Pertussis - outbreaks in multiple states.

It's not complicated. They're just trying to stop women from being able to vote.

4 republican physicians voted for RFK Jr.'s confirmation. : - Roger Marshall (KS) - OB/GYN - Bill Cassidy (LA) - GI doc - Rand Paul (KY) - Opthalmology* - John Barrasso ( WY) - Orthopedic surgery #medsky

Sadanand Dhume & WSJ can fuck all the way off. The largest (mostly) forced mass migration of the last century w/ its massacres, is not an excuse or model for Gazans or any other people. Mr. Dhume (likely Panjabi based on last name) is an embarrassment. - a Panjabi woman born of Partition refugees

Since RFK Jr just got confirmed today, I am taking this chance to share this wonderful @sciam.bsky.social piece on The Staggering Success of Vaccines www.scientificamerican.com/article/see-...

Really helpful thread explaining how indirect costs are calculated.

i am going to put a finer point on this: executive orders are not laws. and they certainly are not royal decrees. they are interpretations of existing law for the purposes of enforcement. the fact that so many people are treating them as laws is actually driving me a bit insane.

98% of NIH grants that should have gone out this month, didn't. Despite court orders 'unfreezing' the funds, they are frozen. Biomedical research will grind to a halt. Clinical trials will end. All for no reason: the total impact on the US budget is miniscule

"People who like to sound tough reflexively back the guys with guns over the guys in jeans with sacks of grain or the guys in suits with papers. But take it from someone who spent nearly 1,500 days downrange over the course of 20 years: USAID is worth every penny." www.thebulwark.com/p/usaid-kept...
