That may be the best compliment I've ever gotten. Thank you! I'm a fan of increasingly misnamed trilogies aka Douglas Adams and C.K. McDonnell.

This work reminds me a little bit of Carl Hiaasen and his zany plots in Florida. I look forward to reading the next books in the series. #books #mysteries #mysterybooks #humor #zany @catrionamcp.bsky.social

She was hilarious in person (somehow she managed to tell a story about her father's funeral that had us cracking up) and that kind of humor definitely follows in this series.

I loved Lexy's observations as she tries to make sense of California/US culture. It's wacky and wild. I had not read anything by McPherson before, but her interview at the Midwest Mysteries Conference last November made me have to read her work.

Lexy decides to help the wife clear her name and finds herself staying at the Last Ditch Motel where she meets a crew of characters with a capital C.

All she needs to do is witness the divorce papers of her only marriage counseling clients, an elderly couple who own a firecracker making company. But instead of her clients show up, the police come up. The husband was killed by a firecracker and his wife is suspected.

Wholeheartedly agree: "Eating alone in a restaurant is dinner with someone you love and a delicious opportunity for people watching."

It's funny and thoughtful about monsters and humans. It's well worth a read. Comes out 6/3. #Books #scifi #monsters #SciFiBooks #dracula @barbaratruelove.bsky.social #ofmonstersandmainframes

It's full of vampires, werewolves, spider robots and even Frankenstein's monster.
I enjoyed the book, especially the POV of the AI. I liked how they were constantly confronting their limitations - like how to deal with humans, or what they could see on the ship.

It's told mostly through the perspective of two AIs, Demeter who runs the transport ship between Earth and Alpha Centauri, and a Medical AI. But when Dracula kills everyone on one of Demeter's voyages, it's a big blow to her reputation, and things get worse. Demeter wants revenge.

It's a love song to our planet. Admittedly, it's not plot driven, more of a character study, but it's so good. I don't know how else to convey the sheer magic of this book to you all. You should read it and see the magic contained within its words for yourselves.

It's about six astronauts in the International Space Station over the course of a day or 16 orbits around the Earth. It's a meditation on what it means to be human, an Earthling, an astronaut, an adventurer.

And yes, it won a Booker and it's totally deserved. (Also, I do find that I adore the winners of the Booker Award as a rule, so I shouldn't be surprised, yet I am).

So until these pigments are cleared, I'd recommend not licking them. Or maybe just don't lick things in a library at all. The top one is a collection of paint samples post-WWII to customize your home.
I also need to go the exhibit on poisonous books at the Walter Museum when I'm in MD for Malice.

We've heard recently about the danger of green inks that contain arsenic. The Newberry Library purchased a X-Ray Fluorescence Analysis that can test non-organic materials. It's got a whole number of uses, but one is figuring out if the pigments below are poisonous or not.
