News just in: Swedish fashion retailer H&M is considering moving to Heard Island and McDonald Islands to take advantage of lower tariffs and the .hm domain. Insiders say this may outweigh higher shipping costs and manufacturing near an active volcano. @heardislandgov.bsky.social is yet to comment.

It’s 9am TFT time here, and citizens are already gathering to protest Tariffs by the United States. Our plain clothes Officer Penguins are attempting to maintain calm, but unfortunately we keep losing them in the crowd.

Bad news for Heard Island as the US imposes a 10% tariff on its main export - windborne glaciovolcanic tephra. This is viewed as a boost for local Alaskan and Cascadia sources. Particularly serious implications for very fine grain sizes as the crypto(tephra) market is volatile at the best of times.

After getting some rest, I am in awe of everyone who continues to lift their voice and speak out. This is a moment for our country, and we must make a choice about the America we want to be.

In case anyone was wondering, the United States isn’t able to deploy USAID’s DART emergency response teams or international search and rescue (USAR) to this or any other crisis.

And now a relative of the GSA head is trying to quietly buy the USGS Menlo Park campus for pennies on the dime... wapo.st/421ugRc

Glad to see someone finally bringing attention to USGS!

Help our friends at the NSF: Seeking scientists based in California who are willing to attest to direct harm caused by NSF firings. If you’re in the science world, please RT this to widen the net— a lawsuit on the unjust mass firings needs these comments. (comment briefly here and I’ll follow up!)

Thank you, Justin Trudeau. Thank you, Canadians. Don't back down.

Fantastic news!! I hope the experts are brought back as well!

Reported by a follower (unverified at this moment): Alaska Science Center Grace Hall in Anchorage which houses the Alaska Volcano Observatory and ASC servers is on the chopping block. Moving the server room would cost upwards of $1.5 million.

Leases for Alaska Volcano Observatory and Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (the two US observatories currently dealing with eruptions) cancelled.

The NSF program officer mentioned here was fired based on a lie about his (excellent) performance. He and the other plaintiffs need to be reinstated immediately and paid damages. The declaration of harm is worth a read, as well as the harrowing transcript from the termination meeting.

NSF starting to archive climate-related solicitations (in BIO, so far...)

The budget bill passed last night allocated about $43 billion next year for Function 250, which covers NASA, NSF, and DOE Science. That's only about $1 billion less than the previous FY25 budget from last summer.

NEW: DOGE arrival imminent, NSF staff warned. “I will professionally share with them that I believe that they are... destroying the most effective and innovative scientific enterprise in the world.” That and more on the Trump Tracker | Science | AAAS www.science.org/content/arti...

Extremely thoughtful thread from a fired NSF Program Officer on what to expect and how to support remaining NSF POs going forward. (Jeremy, I don't know you, but I am so sorry this happened to you, and thank you for your dedication up to the last minute of your employment.)
