Innes et al find a precise date of the Los Chocoyos (Nicaragua) supervolcano eruption from tephra in Greenland ice cores. They found it happened about 80,000 years ago, several thousand years earlier than previously determined. ⚒️🧪🦣 doi.org/10.1038/s432...

This includes the USGS Hawaiian and Alaska Volcano Observatories. HVO's Ironworks is a temporary space while a new facility is built to replace the Observatory critically damaged in 2018. Both groups are near their volcanoes. Neither has anywhere to go and both have been forbidden from telework.

Some examples of research USGS does that is at risk with RIFs and restructuring: - earth quake and volcano monitoring and warnings - landslide risk assessments - water quality testing - wildlife conservation - wildfire prevention and post-fire rehabilitation - invasive species tracking

Arctic sea ice volume through March 1, 2025. The image shows that Arctic sea ice volume in 2024 and 2025 to date has been much lower than in previous years. arctic-news.blogspot.com/2025/02/mech...

Tristan da Cunha, home to the world's most remote community, is facing rising landslide risks as climate change reshapes its volcanic landscape 🌋 BGS scientist @volcanna.bsky.social is on the island, mapping hazards to help protect its 233 inhabitants. 📸 Neil Golding, February 2025

AGU urges the Trump administration to immediately renew U.S. federal commitment to climate science. The U.S. must restore critical climate science leadership for a secure, prosperous future for the country and the world. Read AGU’s statement here: news.agu.org/press-releas...

US volcanoes pose a very real threat to communities and aircraft. Cutting funds will significantly compromise our ability monitor them and mitigate disaster. Why this administration wants us flying blind in volcano territory is an utter mystery. This is not a FAFO situation.

Word of the Day is ‘ingordigiousness’ (18th century): extreme greed at the expense of principles.

We live in a time where "genius" and "specialization" are deemed of utmost importance. However, to understand any complex system like the Earth, you need to make connections across disciplines. This is an attack on US science. NSF staff provide critical support for scientific infrastructure and global excellence. These are valuable dedicated public servants. Please contact your reps, write letters, make noise! Are there any plans for rallies at NSF headquarters? Journalists: COVER THIS!

The question isn’t IF climate change is making extreme weather worse—it’s how much. Science can put a number on how many more homes flood, how much more rain a hurricane dumps, how much larger wildfires grow--and how much worse it will get if we don't act now. More by @frediotto.bsky.social & I:

Sea ice in the Arctic and around Antarctica cool our climate, drive ocean circulation across the planet, and provide a unique habitat for polar ecosystems. Sea ice amounts have now fallen to their lowest since we started measuring them. This is not good. 🌊🥼❄️🧪 www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Found this great film of the Parícutin Volcano eruption (the one that appeared in a farmer's cornfield) on the Smithsonian website. 🌋🌍⚒️ At 36 seconds in, one of the scientists lights a cigarette on a freshly erupted bit of lava rock (looks like a bit of a'a rubble). Do not recommend.

Climate Change in the British Mind 86% of people believe climate change is occurring, and is connected to intensifying extreme weather. >66% think it should be a high or very high government priority. A majority also supports use of renewable energy. climatecommunication.yale.edu/publications...

🧪 Frustrated by the actions (or inactions) of some of our professional and learned societies during this ongoing attack on #science and scholarship more generally? If so, this letter to the @royalsociety.org from my mate, @scurry.bsky.social, is worth a read and I hope, signing ✍🏻

Kudos to @lisgallant.bsky.social for flagging that the illegal USAID shutdown paying out right now may imperil the 39 year-old Volcano Disaster Assistance Program (VDAP). For folks who don't know VDAP, it's a transformative and vital resource for volcano hazard mitgation across the world. 🧵

Terrific lecture by @davidolusoga - inspiring reminder that by sharing our insights we can not only learn more but change more. Bravo! 🙌

I did not know there were volcano awards but my day is better with this information. 🌋
