Mildred Blount (1907-1974), a well-known milliner in the 1930s & 40s, who designed hats for films like "Gone With The Wind", & also Gloria Vanderbilt's wedding veil. She was the 1st black member of the Motion Pictures Costumers Union & fought for the inclusion of black artisans in Hollywood unions.

Lois Alexander Lane (1916-2007) was a fashion designer & founder of the Black Fashion Museum. Born in AR, she earned her Master's in Fashion at NYU. She ran a boutique in DC, before returning to NYC to open the Harlem Institute of Fashion in 1966. She rec'd the NAACP's Crusader Award in 1993.

Reminder: Black history offers many examples of fighting authoritarianism, so one doesn't always have to look to Europe. Nazi lawyers looked to Jim Crow for inspiration for their racist laws. Read as much about struggles against Jim Crow as you do about other examples of resisting authoritarianism

The Black Fashion Museum was founded in Harlem in 1979 by Lois K. Alexander Lane & traced the contributions of black designers thru fashion history. It moved to DC in 1994 & operated until 2007 when the National Museum of African American History & Culture took over the collection for exhibit.

Grace Jones is a Jamaican singer, model, actor, artist & style icon. With an avant garde, androgynous style & an unapologetic, commanding presence, her impact on pop culture, particularly in the 1980s, is undeniable. She continues to inspire artists today, like Beyonce & Lulu James.

Ophelia DeVore (1922-2014) was a model, businesswoman & fashion icon. Born in SC, she moved to NYC in 1933. While attending NYU, she began modeling & became the first black model of note in the US. In 1946, she opened a modeling agency to train models of color. She also had her own cosmetics line.
