I never thought of his drumming as that overly stiff. I mean it works with the angularity and straightforwardness of Interpol’s music. I always thought of it as bringing old school rock sensibilities (obviously not as swingy as classic rock) to an indie rock/post-punk outfit.

Al Foster RIP. A drummer who knew the tradition before going on to curate innovative idiosyncrasies in every detail of that tradition. He sounded magnificent at all times; the Joe Henderson/Foster trios in the '80s offered the greatest "straight-ahead" jazz since the music's heyday in the '60s.
