“Public transportation is critical to California’s future, but a broken permit process has eroded Californians’ trust in transit agencies’ ability to deliver projects on time and on budget.” cal.streetsblog.org/2025/02/19/w...

"But maybe the biggest reason for Trump’s desire to kill the congestion charge is a phenomenon I identified the last time I wrote about this: the rage some Americans obviously feel at any suggestion that people should change their behavior for the common good." Via @pkrugman.bsky.social

In memory of Donald Shoup, we re-released our 2023 interview with the brilliant, witty and influential scholar. "The High Cost of Free Parking" is a hugely important book and his research has influenced countless planners and advocates around the world. RIP. thewaroncars.org/2025/02/08/r...

Here’s the really inconvenient fact for those fighting against de-congestion pricing programs like Manhattan’s Congestion Relief Zone, regardless of the ample evidence supporting them. When they’re implemented, they work. That’s why some folks try so hard to prevent them from being put in place.

There’s no evidence that vaccines cause autism. You know what there IS evidence of, when it comes to causal factors for autism? Air pollution. So cars. Including tail pipes, tire particles, brake pads. And fossil fuel energy-related pollution, industrial pollution, etc. And not just autism.

Oakland DOT set up a nice bike & pedestrian detour around this temporary construction closure at the Telegraph protected bikeway. I worked w staff way back in 2017 to develop the construction controls guideline ensuring safe & accessible facilities past construction closures.

Riding Metro-North this weekend, I couldn’t help but think about how much housing could be built on these massive surface parking lots.

If someone chooses to live in a smaller home in the inner city in part to avoid a long commute, they generally don’t pressure society to build them a bigger house with more stuff. So if you choose a bigger stuff-filled house in the suburbs, don’t expect society to build you a fast car commute.

Senator Jen McEwen, HERO from DULUTH, landing in the middle of the urban highway juggernaut, THANK YOU for asking these important and pointed questions about @mndot.bsky.social's Rethinking I-94 process.

Transit’s response to this morning’s Highway 4 fatal car crash that blocked our tracks was a shining example of regional coordination. TriDeltaTransit and County Connection deployed extra buses to serve East Co Co County riders, connecting them to North Concord BART to get them to work and school.

With the discussions about anti-bike-lane laws and congestion pricing, it felt like the right time for this one youtu.be/PdqZsRayyFk

It's a goal of mine to help make this the most famous, well-known and UNDERSTOOD quote about cities in history. Please share it as much as you can. #InducedDemand

One of the most important model city-building projects in the world. “Initially, everyone thought it would cause gridlock. But people adapted. Now we can’t imagine the highway ever being here.” The fantastic people-place that replaced an elevated highway, transforming a city & improving traffic.

I think we can change the world by having protected bike lanes and secure bike parking everywhere.

I introduced new legislation to expedite delivery of public transit, bike & pedestrian safety projects. It takes way too long to deliver these projects critical for our future. SB 71 makes permanent a CEQA exemption I legislated in 2020 & expands it to include more types of transit infrastructure.🧵

Taking @bart.gov into SF is the safest part of my commute

🚲 🚨 A major improvement for bicyclists has just been completed at Ashby BART Station! The Ashby BART Bicycle Access Improvement Project provides a better and safer bicycle connection to BART from both the west and east, as well as closing a gap in Berkeley’s bike network. 🧵 👇

“Looking at dollars and cents, highways are a poor economic investment. They occupy nearly 25% of U.S. urban land — an area equivalent to West Virginia and valued at $4.1 trillion — yet their supposed benefits don’t justify these enormous costs.” Via @fastcompany.com The real cost is a LOT higher.

My message to Zuck

Maurice DiMaggio, welcome to The War on Cars.

To mark the 1st morning commute of the congestion pricing era, we'll be in Manhattan recording short interviews with pedestrians, transit users and cyclists. Sarah will be on Canal St near the Manhattan Bridge. Doug will be at 60th St and 2nd Ave. Both at about 8:30/8:45 for an hour. Please stop by!

The truck used in the New Orleans terrorist attack is a Ford F-150 Lightning, which is perfectly designed for this kind of attack. It weighs more than 6000 lbs, accelerates to 60 mph in just 4 seconds, and the battering-ram-shaped front is nearly 5 feet tall. Deadly by design.

We build vehicles that weigh 9000 pounds with 1000HP, can go 0-60mph in 3 seconds and market them recklessly. We then ask people to wear construction vests to cross the street. This is all so beyond absurd and it's truly incredible that we've normalized this.

My semi-regular reminder of a really important reality about cities, density, services and taxes. Any questions? Recently cleaned up by @kathrynmathias.bsky.social. #CityMakingMath

US highways are a mess. Instead of focusing on repairs, the country wastes $ adding lanes in a Sisyphean quest to vanquish congestion. A 🧵 with highway stories I wrote in 2024: In @vox.com I challenged road engineers’ false claims that wider roads slow climate change. www.vox.com/future-perfe...

@allthingscivil.bsky.social Can you please do an episode on the lawsuits around the upcoming NYC congestion pricing change?

If your city’s bike network is safe & connected, people of all ages & abilities will use it for transportation & recreation, including Steven the Ice Guy, lake ice depth checker, riding around with an auger on his back. 🚲 ❤️ www.southwestvoices.news/posts/meet-y...

We know that mobility in cities is about space. More specifically, more trips in less space. We’ve seen lots of great images reinforcing that point. This one might be my favourite, from #Santiago, because it ALSO shows the inequality of having buses run in mixed traffic. Dedicated bus-only lanes.

The queue for CA’s 1,500 e-bike vouchers reached 100,000 within minutes. Ya think there might be latent demand for e-bikes as an affordable personal transportation option?

Today is the busiest shopping day of the year 🎁🎄 If you see an empty parking space today, it’s probably not needed. Neither today or any other day of the year. 🚫🅿️ Remember to take a picture of an empty mall parking lot today 📸

Seeing a protected two-way bike lane along my old walk/bike route to school really warms my heart

On January 7th, the Concord, CA city council will be voting on rezoning to allow more affordable housing. Send them an email in support at the link! actionnetwork.org/letters/send...

Hey @bart.gov, what would happen if we removed the airport surcharge? Would that induce more ridership?

Very smart piece for people doing advocacy for cycling or public transit. Don't let your opponents exaggerate their strength.

Covering an update on the region's successful Clipper Bay Pass all agency transit pass pilot at the Fare Integration Task Force. The program has increased ridership; there is a queue of organizations wanting to join; so there's a proposal to increase from 20,000 to 40,000 participants...
