Today, Shane O’Neill, our interim Principal announced the University of Dundee needs to cut 632 jobs to be financially sustainable. Also there are 237 vacancies (in part due to the recruitment freeze since Nov). That’s 870 colleagues from 3200. OVER A QUARTER! www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

I just wrote a @theactionnet letter: Demand the Immediate Release of Palestinian Student Activist Mahmoud Khalil from DHS detention. Write one here: actionnetwork.org/letters/dema...

!!!URGENT!!! THE SAMEER PROJECT ONLY HAS ENOUGH FUNDS TO CONTINUE OPERATING IN THE NORTH FOR 3 MORE DAYS. THIS IS VERY BAD. DONATE NOW!!!!! chuffed.org/project/help...

A new McCarthy era is upon us. Stupid, depressing, and dangerous as ever. I wonder whose name will carry the dunce cap in the history books. Too many are complicit. I’ll need to find upset and action, but for now I’m feeling grief at the dehumanization inherent to all this.

Huge solidarity to @ducuuo.bsky.social who are out on strike this week, fighting against cruel and unfair redundancies.

Brilliant and damning analysis by @ucuedinburgh.bsky.social on how their "Management is manufacturing a crisis to justify staff costs" www.ucuedinburgh.org.uk/blog/3fzpaa5...

There is nothing crazy about this. This horrific video epitomizes the logic of current meme-fascism: it's a colonization of the imagination that precedes and aestheticizes real neo-imperialist violence, dressed up in the glossy looks of stock imagery, influencer content and online scamming 1/

"Cinema Sgire ran from 1977 to 1981 and involved training local people to use some of the first commercially available portable video cameras to tell their own stories in their own way." BBC News - Island life of the 1970s brought back on screen www.bbc.com/news/article...

I am so pleased to announce a Palestinian Studies cluster hire at @huntercollege.bsky.social - we are hiring one person in the arts and another in the social sciences. This is an incredible source of pride for me as a faculty member & one of the many reasons that I feel so lucky to work here 1/

Dundee University staff begin three-week strike

Last week I got DMs from Gazans that the eSims we sent them and kept topped up allowed them to graduate university. This is why eSims are still necessary. Donate: bit.ly/eSimsRUs #ConnectingGaza

This is the now third deportation “detention” site outside the U.S. that the administration has disclosed. These are more than concentration camps; they’re what’s called “zones of lawlessness.” People being held in isolated facilities. Some if not all are de facto stateless.

Nothing to see here, of course,: "A QUB spokesperson said: “The investment in Gift City is unrelated to the university’s voluntary severance scheme and it is vital to point out that there will be no compulsory redundancies as part of this process …" www.theguardian.com/education/20...

An excellent and informative website in defence of the Modern Languages department at @cardiffuni.bsky.social. Well done to the team behind this ✊✊ #SaveCardiffLanguages

The forcible displacement of over 40,000 people in the northern West Bank is repeating scenes from Gaza and stoking fears of ethnic cleansing. "The most important thing is to stay in our home," a resident of al-Far'a refugee camp tells Mondoweiss. mondoweiss.net/2025/02/humi...

STUDENT PROTESTORS AT BOWDOIN COLLEGE IN MAINE TOOK A BUILDING LAST NIGHT 👀👀👀 Take a building challenge back on???

Unpopular opinion, but people thinking Mexican and Cdn govts played Trump by agreeing to what was already in place (border securitization) are misreading ideological dimension of far right rise Anti migrant racism is cross party, but openly conceding it here entrenches it as "common sense" racism.

Democrats were quicker to respond to students protesting a genocide than to the richest man on earth trying to unilaterally shut down a government agency

Such a gorgeous archive, which includes among many gems a Med Hondo fund

Happy Black History Month! Produced before Stonewall, dir Nikolai Ursin's gently-activist short Behind Every Good Man (1967) provides a glimpse into the life of a Black trans woman in the U.S. at the mid-century. Preserved by UCLA Film & Television Archive for Outfest UCLA Legacy Project.

Solidarity with all colleagues at Cardiff affected these brutal cuts. It’s so depressing (and short-sighted) that the same essential subjects keep being targeted. chng.it/QR85x4XHSJ

The impending closure of Grangemouth oil refinery is a crucial story in Scotland's unjust energy transition. At 1pm on 11 Feb @riyokoshibe.bsky.social and I will present findings from interviews with Grangemouth workers @energy-ethics.bsky.social in St Andrews. Sign up to attend in person or online!

Below is a list of initiatives and resources to support Palestinian students, academics and universities, particularly in the UK and Ireland (but some opportunities are further afield). Please use the form below to add to this list, and please share widely. docs.google.com/forms/d/1mKm...

Taking on bank loans to deal with savings justified by previous bank loans. But we don't need an urgent change to the finance AND GOVERNANCE system of universities... 🙄

Gaza today, and for now, disrupts and defies the global agenda of rendering entire populations disposable and rightless. This was achieved through the resilience of an entire population that has endured months of displacement, starvation, disease, and bombardment.

The Sameer Project and Translating Palestine are supporting people returning North today. They are paying for cars transporting people, provide snacks and water. The need for funds are immense as people rebuild but donations have slowed. Please support generously: chuffed.org/project/help...

How does a genocide sound? Amid bombs, missiles, explosions, what silences does it impose? And what sounds can an international solidarity front produce? How can one exploit reverberation, exercise echo? How can all frequencies be occupied to finally make the inaudible present?

"Why must Palestinians prove their humanity? And what are the implications of such an infuriatingly impossible task?" A virtual book talk with Mohammed El-Kurd and Robin D.G. Kelley on Feb 11 @ 7:30pm ET www.tickettailor.com/events/hayma...

On Jan. 9, Palestinian artist Rehab Nazzal joined us for a powerful artist talk & protest against #ConcordiaUniversity administration's unjust dismissal of curator Pip Day, the now-former Director of the Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery due to her pro-Palestine programming. #Montreal

Roads in the west bank blocked, Palestinians from Jerusalem receiving text messages telling them to go back to Jerusalem, mass arrests, and almost 900 checkpoints set up across the territory. Whats going to happen to the west bank?

Thousands of people in Gz do not even have gofundmes that we can donate to, so it’s only thru groups on the ground like The Sameer Project that we can ensure money gets to some of the most vulnerable: chuffed.org/project/help...

The footage of the prisoners being released is beautiful - almost like a rehearsal for the celebrations of when we free Palestine, where the celebrations will be a million times more beautiful.

@scmstudies.bsky.social please take good note! Denouncing Israel's genocide of Palestinians and backing BDS is grounded in the intellectual history of our discipline

The Palestine Film Institute's weekly online film programme is back www.palestinefilminstitute.org/en/pfp

Just frenetically reposting all the #AHA updates because I'm so livid. Our institutions are so totally useless

This is how most professional associations have chosen, time and time again, when forced with meaningful conversations. All institutions of higher learning in Gaza have been *destroyed* in the course of the ongoing genocide. All of them. How could we *not* have something to say about this?

So all those celebratory and congratulatory posts were premature since the overlords of empire have determined that scholasticide and genocide are more important. Historians should boycott membership dues to AHA.

A great new #documentary playlist to accompany the forthcoming @bloomsburybooksus.bsky.social book Women and Global Documentary, both by Najmeh Moradiyan-Rizi and Shilyh Warren.
