Hey Berkeleyans! Does your kid bike to school? Do you wish they could but don't feel it's safe enough? There’s a BUSD-specific listening session on the Bike Plan update: Tue 2/25, 6:30-8:30pm at King! Would be great to get input from families on how Berkeley can make it safer to bike to school.

I am strongly in favor of this change. Over 15 years ago, 5-year old Zachary was killed at this intersection. We have known for years that this is dangerous, and it's past time that we do something about it. Thank you for your leadership on pedestrian safety, @markhumbert.bsky.social.

One car in 10 stops at the slip right turn at Zachary’s Corner. This intersection will be redesigned and reconstructed with funds from Berkeley’s LRDP settlement with UC Berkeley, per my request. It’s a top priority project for our Public Works Dept. Can’t happen soon enough.

200+ e-bikes have been added for shared use in Berkeley making it easier, faster, and more accessible to make one-way bike-trips around town! Take advantage of Berkeley's network of bike lanes, cycle tracks and bike boulevards. 🚴‍♀️🚴🚴‍♂️ Read more: berkeleyca.gov/commu...

This funding will help deliver Berkeley’s Adeline Street Quick-Build project, which will add separated bikeways for 0.6 miles between the Oakland border and Ashby BART!

This is an essential job that we need to fill in our city! Please help spread the word, and thank you to @walkbikeberk.bsky.social for the post.

Statistics cannot capture the human cost of traffic violence on Berkeley’s unsafe streets. 💔

JOB: Berkeley is hiring a new Transportation Division Manager! Please share widely. The City needs a leader committed to Vision Zero and sustainable transportation! wbcp.applicantpool.com/jobs/1182604

The Berkeley elementary school commute!

As with every serious/fatal ped or bicyclist crash, I’m just gutted by Sunday’s tragic but preventable incident where a 66-year old neighbor lost her life. When will we stop elevating driver speed & convenience over life? How can we build a future where 87-year olds have options besides driving?

Stop by the at South Berkeley Farmers Market 2-6pm today (Jan 28) to share your thoughts on the City’s bike plan update!

Our statement on Elise Lusk’s tragic death.

“Every single one of the traffic fatalities that we have seen in this city is preventable, and it is especially preventable through infrastructure,” -Councilmember Cecilia Lunaparra www.berkeleyside.org/2025/01/24/b...

We are deeply upset by this horrible news of another pedestrian death in our community. Holding all who knew and loved Elise Lusk in our thoughts.

Berkeley people - show up to speak up FOR bikes! FOR all ages and abilities! Our city staff too often hear from people *against* things. But we know that’s not representative of general sentiment. So show up to one of these events with enthusiasm and your hopes for what we can achieve!

Hi to everybody, but especially to any Bike East Bay members & Bluesky migrators. You're invited to our annual member meeting! We'll be voting in new board members, sharing org updates, and there will be plenty of pizza and drinks to share. RSVP at secure.everyaction.com/4kepWK0h5kSu...

🚨 Keep OakDOT independent! 🚨 OakDOT has proven themselves highly effective at delivering critical safety improvements. Merging them with OPW puts this success at risk Tell Council to reject a hasty merger and push for more thoughtful, long-term solutions instead tvrr.substack.com/p/another-da...

“Walk Bike Berkeley has cheered the law as a common-sense step to make streets safer. But…they called for the city to set aside funding to paint curbs red and install barriers so that people don’t park in the newly illegal spots to begin with.” www.berkeleyside.org/2024/12/11/b...

The new Ashby BART parking lot bike cut-through is open! There's still work to be done by the city on either end (crossing Adeline and MLK), but it's nice to see this coming along!

Telegraph For People co-signed this letter to the City of Berkeley with @walkbikeberk.bsky.social, Cal Dems, and Sunrise Bay Area criticizing the pedestrian and bike safety failures on Rose Street in North Berkeley that led to the tragic death of pedestrian Ben Brown.

I was proud to sign on to this letter. One thing that I just don’t get, we’re hurting ourselves, it’s our own community that is harming itself. Most of the drivers are from Berkeley, most of the pedestrians and cyclists are from Berkeley. We should be helping each other.

There have been 5 pedestrian or cyclist involved crashes on Rose street since 2015. 4 of those 5 occurred at this intersection. 3 of those 4 were severe or fatal. tims.berkeley.edu/tools/detail... tims.berkeley.edu/tools/detail... tims.berkeley.edu/tools/detail... tims.berkeley.edu/tools/detail...

Our letter to @cityofberkeley.bsky.social requesting Vision Zero rapid response improvements at Rose and Josephine and a renewed effort to staff and support Public Works so we stop missing opportunities for safety improvements.

Please read this thread.

Every traffic fatality is a human being lost, a community forever mourning. Thank you, @berkeleyscanner.bsky.social for this profile of Ben Brown. www.berkeleyscanner.com/2024/11/18/t...

🥳 Yes on FF Victory Party! 🎉 Berkeley voters chose smooth, safe streets! Let’s celebrate! This Saturday, 11/23, 5pm RSVP: www.yesonff.com for address

Beloved, long-time Berkeley community member Ben Brown was the pedestrian killed on Rose Street. Please consider donating to this GoFundMe to help his family with funeral expenses and travel. gofund.me/c4cb551e

To our knowledge this is the first time @cityofberkeley.bsky.social has issued a news release about a traffic fatality. We appreciate the acknowledgment and encourage rapid response actions, consistent with the City’s #VisionZero Action Plan. berkeleyca.gov/community-re...

Using Telraam sensors, we showed that speeds increased on Rose after paving was completed with no accompanying traffic calming. Higher speeds increase the likelihood and severity of a deadly collision. Devastated that we continue to prioritize vehicle movement and storage over people’s lives.

“The city is developing a plan to implement the [daylighting] bill.” “[Daylighting] increases sight lines and visibility of pedestrians crossing the street.” “Walk Bike Berkeley is…’very, very supportive.’” www.dailycal.org/news/city/da...

“Rose Street was repaved late last year, and Fry said it should have also gotten safety upgrades such as speed tables or raised crosswalks to go with the new pavement.” www.berkeleyside.org/2024/11/15/v...

More deaths and injuries will occur unless we act courageously to secure our streets. More traffic calming, more lighting, more bike lanes, more speed tables, better visibility and fewer drivers who treat our residential streets like highways!

This is an important thread. We cannot say we are just listening to the concerns of the local community when they oppose safe streets—we do not do that for fire hydrants, for instance. Everyone who lives in or visits Berkeley should to be able to travel safely, and no local concern should veto that.
