A lot of them don't want to "engage with constituents" somewhere they might get feedback from outside their bubble. They go to traditional media because they know that the "reporters" will throw them softballs and won't ask follow up questions.

I used to go at least every other week, but the prices are getting to be too much. Even then, I wouldn't mind it so much if I actually enjoyed more than 25% of the last 10 films I saw.

I'll agree with you on this one, too (and not facetiously this time). I get a little tired of the "... and there's nothing we can do about it" mentality, too. Sometimes people have to work through that hopelessness before they're ready to do something about it.

Very few (real) people are going to be upbeat all the time. You are spreading your own "misery" complaining about the misery of others. Oddly enough, I only seem to get what I subscribe to in my Subscriptions. And if I don't like something, it's my responsibility to remove it from my feed.

So sub the people who provide that content and use your Subscription feed instead of the Recommendations.
It's not that hard unless you're expecting someone else to do everything for you - a mentality that has produced the "doom and gloom" people keep whining about.
