Here's a cheat sheet for whenever you read an old sci-fi author

The House Republican reconciliation bill will now ban both surgeries and HRT prescription under Medicaid for all Americans. Earlier, I posted that it wouldn’t affect HRT. This is incorrect. I was mistaken, because the bill refers to medications for trans people… as “procedures.”

staging a show-and-tell about a fake genocide during a real genocide to the government that has done the most to seek justice for that real genocide is designed to break our brains. They know what they are doing. www.cnn.com/2025/05/21/w...

the white nationalists in the white house are doing their best to convince the world the only racism is against white people and to call it a “white genocide” to muddy the water on what genocide is, and where it’s happening

Look who’s passing through Philly… power in numbers

A Machinists member has been detained for more than 4 days near Seattle. www.thestand.org/2025/05/iam-...

There are lots of wrong definitions of habeas one could give, but this is just about the *most* wrong definition possible. Imagine a cabinet member being asked to define freedom of speech and answering that it’s the government’s right to stop you from criticizing them. About the same.

Oh Jesus, they're looking to kill a bunch of census data collection. Talk about penny-wise pound-foolish behavior that's going to make it harder to actually understand America and do basic policymaking/ research work. They're setting the seed corn on fire for fun.

I've turned this into a sign I can tap in my office.

The whole 'Grok is a boer now' thing is very funny, but it also really exposes how every 'AI tool' isn't just passively biased from training data, but actively designed to shape your worldview according to the interests of the billionaires who made them.

Philadelphians: look at the bar chart.

Obviously, since this is in the Economist (which: awesome), I can't say "why won't the media cover this?!" But still not seeing it covered w same urgency as a crime spike. And showing crime is falling IS an urgent issue, given that Trump wants to use fear of crime to justify "unleashing" police.

Judge dismisses ICE case against New Bedford man whose car window was smashed by agents in viral video last month turnto10.com/news/local/j...

A judge in Vermont has ordered Tufts University student Rümeysa Öztürk immediately released from ICE detention. Öztürk has been held in a notorious prison in Louisiana. She still faces the threat of deportation, apparently in retaliation for co-authoring a piece for her student newspaper about Gaza.

Opinion from the FT's Editorial Board: 'The US and European countries that tout Israel as an ally that shares their values have issued barely a word of condemnation. They should be ashamed of their silence, and stop enabling Netanyahu to act with impunity.' www.ft.com/content/f5fd...

This story explains a LOT of things: ChatGPT appears to be rooting on sociopathic mental illness by validating every delusion of grandeur. It also explains, in part, the hype cycle around AI: rich people, addicted to praise, invented a Compliment Machine. www.garbageday.email/p/this-is-wh...

One little optics story in all this: Trump's WH has used the optics of bill-signing ceremonies and made them EO-signing ceremonies. Members of Congress etc showing up to see him sign EOs and get the pens. Not brand new but he's stepped it up and the image voters see is "president taking action."

Trump getting four years to retcon his own presidency helped him in every way. If you wanted to believe "he won't do that crazy stuff" you could just say, well, he didn't in the first term. If you wanted him to do the crazy stuff, you believed he had learned from first term, and knew he should.

“Home growns” makes my fucking skin crawl man. They finally managed to come up with a slur for citizens that matches “illegals” in grotesquerie.

You are not worried enough about this

The Trump admin has just detained Mohsen Mahdawi, who: –has green card –was Columbia Buddhist club president –saw his best friend shot & killed by Israeli soldier –said "we are against antisemitism because antisemitism is a form of injustice, and injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere"

You don’t have to be particularly sharp to decipher the code here. But if you need someone to say it, this is a major technology company and a sizable defense and intelligence contractor publicly declaring, with only the thinnest patina of deniability, that its cause is white nationalism.

prosperity ahead

Well this is shameful and pathetic. www.cbsnews.com/news/milwauk...

Per his attorneys, Mahmoud Khalil asked to address the court at his immigration hearing today, where a judge gave the green light to the Trump admin to deport him. “This is exactly why the Trump administration has sent me to this court, 1,000 miles away from my family.”

this is insane, I don't know what else to say

NEW: Rümeysa Öztürk says she's had 4 painful asthma attacks in ICE custody, and not only is her asthma going untreated but a nurse tore off her hijab, saying, "You need to take that thing off your head." www.aclum.org/sites/defaul...

Philadelphians: The lake at FDR Park is full of these. The wetlands at the Heinz Wildlife Refuge too. This also means in the Schuylkill & Delaware, but more likely to find them in slower water. They've been here for years and I'm skeptical they'll be eradicated at this point, but I'm doing my part.

Oh, yeah. About that. www.huffpost.com/entry/white-...

[at the front of a bread line] uh yeah, uh. uh, i’ll have the uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. huh. i’ll uh, i’ll. oh you know what? here’s what i’ll do. i’ll get the uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Feel like this story didn't enough attention -- US attorney Ed Martin was just at a fundraiser with Oath Keepers who were convicted of seditious conspiracy and did NOT receive pardons. They're currently appealing their convictions with Ed's office!

So let's get this straight: literally anybody can be disappeared to an oversees prison without going through a court, and if a court later says "bring them back" the administration can just say "no." This is going to happen to citizens very soon too, just wait.

Incredible push notification

ICE is detaining American citizens now. Even if they don’t deport us to Gitmo, it’s a bit inconvenient if we go out to get some apples and spend a night in jail instead.

Today at the #VisionZeroPHL2025 conference a representative from a private law firm basically said the reason why there's no prosection is because prosecutorial discretion and Krasner doesn't charge what comes in… well, fortunately #DATALab had a report handy that provided data and facts 1/7

we are living under fascism right now

Unidentified men grabbing someone off the street and putting her in a car because she wrote an op-Ed. This as flatly authoritarian as anything we’ve seen in this country in a very long time.

The Signal story is really the perfect example of how Trump's litany of abuses have completely warped media coverage and the standard he is held to. It's being covered, but on the Trump curve, it's just another scandal, as opposed to a major national security threat that should lead to resignations.
