NYC freelancer comrades! Go hang out with @fspnwu.bsky.social organizer and member Kayti this afternoon and share your rates IRL!

New York City friends! Make me the most jealous @fspnwu.bsky.social organizer in the world by meeting up with Kayti in person this Thursday to commiserate over our bleak industry, and build community and solidarity with your fellow freelancers!

If you're in NYC this Thursday, I am hosting a casual @fspnwu.bsky.social meetup to take part in the rate-sharing challenge. It will be from 4-6pm at Spring Cafe Aspen. Bring your laptop to enter rates into the challenge's Google form, and get to know fellow freelance workers! RSVP: bit.ly/41OXdjg

And even more 🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠 If you want to help your fellow freelancer friends (& any ex-VF enemies) understand what the actual freelance media worker $$ landscape is these days, come add YOUR rates to WPW & the @fspnwu.bsky.social Rate Sharing Database! freelancesolidarity.org/actions-camp...

We've received so many great pitches that we will be closing to further pitches tonight at midnight CT, and reopening next quarter. We know this may be dismaying news for some, but we don't want to trap great writing in a lengthy backlog!

We're hosting a Dart Center training for journalists who need more tools to cope with stress, trauma, and burnout right now. 📅 March 12 🕛 9am PT / 12pm ET 🖥️ On zoom Open to TJA members. We'll record the training, too. Register now 👇 members.transjournalists.org/event-6091290

Publish your rates! –> @whopayswriters.bsky.social Also: Unionize. This is for that: @fspnwu.bsky.social

there are simply too many stories and not enough paid journalists to write them all. this is by design.

SO COOL that Vox Media had two rounds of layoffs in the past three months and keeps cutting our budgets and yet somehow there's $20 million for one person

Since last March, @nymagunion.bsky.social has been negotiating a new contract. But Vox Media has refused to meet us halfway on basic issues including giving us meaningful wage increases, controlling health care costs, and offering reasonable protections around AI in our workplace.

Our colleagues at @nymagunion.bsky.social need your support! Sign the NY Mag Reader Pledge to honor the picket line in the event of a unit walkout, and pass it on! nymagunion.org/reader-pledge

Join us for session 1 of our 3-part training series on legal, physical, & digital safety for freelancers & independent journalists, organized in collaboration with the Committee to Protect Journalists, @reporterscommittee.bsky.social, and Aegis Safety Alliance. RSVP: bit.ly/FSP-safety-trainings

We are ecstatic to report that the charges against our member and independent journalist @alissaazar.bsky.social were DROPPED. This is a strong reminder of the power of public pressure as protecting press freedom becomes even more critical. Read Alissa's story: buff.ly/40u8Qub

We're hiring over at @theprospect.bsky.social. Two writing fellow positions are open. Those are perfect for early career journalists. We're also hiring a managing editor. Take a look over at prospect.org/careers. DM me if you have any questions or interested candidates.

Looking forward to this! I encourage my other journo and journo adjacent followers to tune in, too. Come hear about how anti-Palestine bias shapes the news and journalists' working conditions.

Freelance solidarity who? Our January 28 info session is a great place to learn more about the history of FSP-NWU and our current and future organizing projects. RSVP to join us Tuesday at 7:30pm ET! buff.ly/3KU9M4e

don’t write for new spin. see: their transphobic op-ed, u.s. army partnership, etc.

Amazing news! Welcome Athletic journalists to better job security, better pay, better benefits and a better workplace!

As we enter 2025, we know one thing for sure—groceries aren’t getting any cheaper and exposure still doesn’t pay for them! Want to push for higher rates next year? RSVP for the @fspnwu.bsky.social x @indiejournalists.bsky.social webinar Negotiate Like a Rockstar on 1/17: bit.ly/rockstarnegotiator

Writers! Tag us in your end-of-year “what I wrote & what I got paid” threads and we’ll share them to our feed here. Nothing merrier than transparency and solidarity with our fellow creative workers ✊🎄💸

I'm going to do a quick year-end freelancing thread! It's a shorter one this year: Finding the right writing/teaching/toddler parenting balance has taken a bit of time, but I've finally found my footing (as much as anyone can). And I had the pleasure of working on some great assignments.

✊🎉WE HAVE A DEAL 🎉✊ We are thrilled to announce we have reached a tentative three-year agreement with @nytimes.com, pending ratification by our members. There’s so much to share but here are just a few highlights of the deal:
