On December 3, 1924, the freighter “Lakeland” sank in Lake Michigan off Sturgeon Bay. Unlike most winter wrecks, the crew survived. Oddly, Captain McNeely never sent a distress signal or accepted help. Photos showed it sinking stern-first, fueling fraud claims. Read more: wihist.org/40xcBPu
