As @joshuabenton.com observes, a newspaper owner is entitled to run the opinion section the way he wants. What's ridiculous about the Post situation is the hypocrisy of saying the paper must avoid all appearance of bias, only to now triple down on a specific bias: www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

“The costs of dismantling agencies, dramatically politicizing state capacity, and demeaning the idea of public service will still be counted long after Trump has departed the scene,” Donald Moynihan writes:

New, from me @theatlantic.com: *No, the federal government is not too big *It has real human capital needs *Firings are indiscriminate, weakening state capacity *Creating a toxic and politicized workplace is driving away dedicated employees www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

"Most Americans don’t want to believe that their government is taking lifesaving medicine away from sick people in Africa, or betraying Afghans who sacrificed for this country. They might disapprove of foreign aid, but they want starving children to be fed." www.theatlantic.com/magazine/arc...

Free speech is a God-given right. It is not something that Trump, Elon Musk, or anyone else can grant or take away. Americans are born with the right to speak freely, and to publish freely. I wrote about the president's attempts to control the AP: www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

From my piece on The Snitch State over the summer ... the purpose of snitch states is to make you so scared of being snitched on you don't dare to say, think, or do that which is forbidden. If people are scared and silent it's done its job even if no one is caught www.theatlantic.com/magazine/arc...

Trump’s election was fueled by millions of Americans embracing a mystical version of charismatic Christianity whose goal is to roll back the Enlightenment and destroy the secular state: www.theatlantic.com/magazine/arc...

"In another sense, the movement has never been about policies or changes to the law; it’s always been about the larger goal of dismantling the institutions of secular government to clear the way for the Kingdom. It is about God’s total victory." www.theatlantic.com/magazine/arc...

“In my view, there is no innocent explanation in a universe where fairies don’t exist.” Read about the scandal rocking business schools from @engber.bsky.social www.theatlantic.com/magazine/arc...

In 2023, Harvard Business School suspended a star professor over charges of research misconduct. As it happens, one of her papers also had funny data from a *different* B-school superstar -- a "mad, fraudulent unicorn,” per @jamesheathers.bsky.social... (1/3) www.theatlantic.com/magazine/arc...

Business schools are in the grips of a scandal that threatens to undermine their most influential research—and the credibility of an entire field, @engber.bsky.social writes.

Abortion bounties, book bans, forcing families with trans kids to flee their homes: Republicans are building a model of govt that forces people to live and act how conservatives want, enforced by the fear that anyone can be an informant.
