And not incidently, here’s to Lewis “Lou” Reed, born on this date, March 2, in 1942 at Beth El Hospital in Brooklyn. He had one helluva career + made lots of important music. His best songs — the ones that mean the most to me — are flush with empathy, which seems in terribly short supply these days.

RIP David Johansen. I once interviewed him for the Times; very funny, smart, spiritual in his way (“a Catholic Taoist,” he told me w/a phlegmy chuckle). A carved-in-stone New Yorker. A damn shame the Dolls never made it into the Rock Hall of Fame, an honor that I believe would’ve meant a lot to him.
