If you're connected to the University of Minnesota in any way, even just as a taxpayer of Minnesota, reach out and tell the Regents what you think

House Republicans approved a budget resolution calling for $880 billion in cuts to Medicaid. "There is no way that [Medicaid] will be cut without absolutely gutting benefits that go to households who really, really need it," said EPI President @hshierholz.bsky.social. www.epi.org/publication/...

CIDRAP's webpage is a good example of the type of "institutional statement" that would be prohibited by the policy proposed by the Regents.

My assessment of the potential conflicts of interests within U.S. university trustee boards, particularly during periods of crisis. www.linkedin.com/pulse/univer...

The resolution before the Regents would be a disaster. The notion that the MN Journalism Center or other public-facing centers should be barred from making statements about matters of public concern is completely nonsensical. We exist in large part to engage externally on matters of public concern.

Imagine leaders of a public University prohibiting its institutes, centers and academic departments from making “statements addressing matters of public concern or public interest." If you are an alum, student or supporter, tell the Regents what a mistake that is regents.umn.edu/contact-info...

Minnesota’s attorney general can’t address a high school Black History Month assembly without facing threats of “significant disruption” so serious that the school cancels the event.

Collective bargaining is how we shape quality higher education for students, faculties, and communities. So proud of the work our members at Miami University did to secure their FIRST union contract! Congrats Faculty Alliance of Miami! @AAUP.bsky.social @oftunion.bsky.social

Thanks @melvincarter.bsky.social!

Congratulations to the Faculty Alliance of Miami University on reaching a tentative agreement for a groundbreaking first contract! These professors & academic librarians will now have a voice & a union contract that preserves academic freedom and job security! @aaup.bsky.social @aftunion.bsky.social

They entered on this passage: "For the wretched of the earth There is a flame that never dies Even the darkest night will end And the sun will rise They will live again in freedom In the garden of the Lord . . . "

It's strikingly similar to the white supremacy campaigns in Reconstruction North Carolina, as described by Gregory Downs in Declarations of Independence (p.192), where Black employment in government jobs was framed as prima facie evidence of anti-white discrimination.

“This is the moment in which they come for trans people. You know the poem by Lutheran Pastor Martin Niemöller. You know what happens next. Time to fight back.” @lollardfish.bsky.social

“We are the checks and balances,” says federal worker Chris Dols, who is organizing protests against mass government layoffs. Dols calls on the broader labor movement to get involved in opposition to DOGE’s power grab.

TOMORROW (WED): Rallies are being held across the country to protest the funding cuts to science and the illegal firing of federal workers. Please join if you can. We need to show that many people oppose these destructive attacks on science and healthcare. Details: labor4highered.org

I’ve seen too many higher ed folks wave away the threat to our universities. We need to understand what is coming and get organized right now to fight back. Join your union, form a union, join your AAUP chapter, talk to your colleagues. Do it now @ucaft.bsky.social

The classic response to those who denigrate the contributions of public workers - so much needed in the times of Trump and Musk!

The University of Illinois Press published A David Montgomery Reader: Essays on Capitalism and Worker Resistance, a collection of essays, some of them previously unpublished, by the late historian & UE member. You can read the UE NEWS review of it here: www.ueunion.org/ue-news-feat...

… and Black History Month is in February BECAUSE it grew out of celebrations of Douglass’ (and Lincoln’s) birthdays.

among the things wrong with this: -"since this event is organized as part of Black History Month" it was honoring his birthday, excuse the man for being born in February? - "colorblindness" means "if you're a person of color I don't wanna see shit by, about, or with you" - these are segregationists

Tonight! Higher ed workers are mobilizing against myriad political attacks. Want to get involved? Tonight (2/13) at 8pm ET we're hosting a National Strategy Call, during which we will discuss upcoming strategies and actions. Join us! us06web.zoom.us/webinar/regi...
