Stand with science. Always.

I maxed out my credit card, emptied my savings account, and took out a loan to move from Alabama to Bethesda, MD. I don’t even qualify for unemployment since I’ve only worked at NIH for a month. I will be financially and medically devastated. Seeking suggestions for anywhere that’s hiring!!

Sonar, from Perplexity, looks interesting. Have not used it yet, but it offers a search api with reasoning backed by Perplexity's 'mods' to DeepSeek r1. 'Mods' is probably not the best term, but r1 behaves somewhat differently depending on the host. docs.perplexity.ai/home

The US has agreed to stop importing seafood linked with bycatch, where whales, sharks, turtles & other marine life are collateral damage of reckless fishing. Great work by @centerforbiodiv.bsky.social NRDC, AWI, creating global pressure to eliminate bycatch. biologicaldiversity.org/w/news/press...

From age 18 to 22, I volunteered twice a year in India's Pulse Polio Vaccination drive. We knocked on so many doors & convinced so many strangers. When India finally eradicated polio, I felt personal & collective pride. RFK Jr offends me in ways I can't even fully articulate!

BREAKING: Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin KILL Biden nominee for Nat'l Labor Relations Board (NLRB), which would've meant Dem majority till '26 Instead Trump gets to set labor rules So when EVERYONE in America loses overtime - as Project 2025 promises - thank Sinema and Manchin

I was trying to photograph this beautiful glaucous-winged gull when I got unexpectedly photobombed by a harbor seal that had caught a very large fish--presumably a salmon. 🪶 📷Ballena Bay

CoT can actually degrade outputs in cases where overthinking hurts humans too, and models share the same limitations. E.g. CoT worsened face recognition (language can't capture subtle visual details) but helped with complex decisions where memory was a critical prerequisite. arxiv.org/abs/2410.21333

NEW TODAY: Anthem BCBS will no longer implement time cap on anesthesiologist care during surgeries in Connecticut, the plan that was expected to take effect this February - "I would encourage them to go further and cancel its implementation in the other states they plan to use it in."

The hardest job in the world is being a #father in #Gaza.

I don't see how it is possible to understand the US today without this book.

This is my first post using MacWhisper. Let's see if it can handle my 300 words correctly and make sense. It did. My post may not have been very interesting, but I'm pretty pleased with what Max Whisper can do on a machine without a GPU.

I'm a few days late, but last night I started anwer.ai class "solve it with code'. I'm impressed. The authors are thinking (and coding) seriously about the possibities of using AIs as collaborators while coding w/o putting the AIs in charge.

Evidently, it is the 2st century. I'm behind so I just purchased Machisper pro...currently on sale. I expect to finish my first novel this week. Or, at least write 20 lines of python or APL

This is my second rodeo

Just to be clear: the incoming Trump administration is going to war against their own Republican senate majority and the constitution's advice and consent provision so they can make a man investigated for ***sex trafficking a minor*** into the most powerful law enforcement officer in the country.

This is a lie, and it's always been a lie. Something like ChatGPT needs a TON of text in the language you're targeting to train the model. You get it by licensing it, or you by paying people to write it for you, or by stealing it. What they're saying is it's impossible to create CHEAPLY.

A quick history of the First Alabama Union Cavalry. It discusses the long campaign to establish and maintain the myth that the South was unified in support for secession and slavery. Howell Raines, a former executive editor of the New York Times has a new book and this is a taste.

Really, really thankful to @willknight.bsky.social for covering this *critical* piece of the AI puzzle. It's something few would otherwise pay attention to, yet will affect everything that AI will become. Also great quotes from @ruchowdh.bsky.social & Yacine Jernite! www.wired.com/story/americ...

Full sequence of the annular solar eclipse at Shiprock, New Mexico. This was a dream composition of mine. So much time, energy, and money went into making it happen. I'm forever grateful to the Navajo for letting me shoot it from sacred ground. An experience I'll never forget.

Deb Chachra’s HOW INFRASTRUCTURE WORKS comes out in two weeks, and it’s the perfect time to preorder it. I loved it, as you can tell by this blurb. It’s exactly the kind of book I think we need right now. And Deb is a truly wonderful human to boot. www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/612711...

A Lab Test That Experts Liken to a Witch Trial Is Helping Send Women to Prison for Murder The “lung float” test claims to help determine if a baby was born alive or dead, but many medical examiners say it’s too unreliable. Yet it is still being used to bring murder charges — and get convictions.
