Always read the credits when you play a game -- a lot of the time, you'll see a logo for some kind of government-funded art grant, or a line that says "this game is made possible by a grant from XYZ". Without these funds, your favorite games wouldn't exist.

The narrative/VN genre has always been niche, but those games, at least to us, are the most convincing proof that games can stand on their own next to Citizen Kane and Ulysses as meaningful, artistic, and personal creations. There's exciting things happening in the space right now, if you look.
